In Texas, All Is... Well?

Jan 03, 2009 22:37

So, as per my last post, I've moved to Texas. Initial packing could have gone better, but the drive itself was uneventful, and with the exception of not having any furniture here besides a computer chair, I'm pretty well settled in. Overall, things are pretty good - apartment isn't everything I might have wanted, but it's better than I was ( Read more... )

You must have been living under a rock in LA. Seventh gen has been around for decades. :P

It's not like I go out buying cleaning products regularly, and probably never at a place like Whole Foods which is much more likely ot carry something like that. I think in L.A. I did it at Target. This was at the most common grocery store chain around here, though, meaning it must have some reasonable market penetration.

You haven't heard of that Seventh Generation stuff? Target got real big on carrying it within the last couple of years. You can find most of the line there. You can also find them in a lot of "natural foods" type places, so they sure seem legit to me.

I did chemicals enough in my few months to know the Fayetteville store didn't carry it when I was there. I'd imagine the price went up on the petroleum-based cleaners (along with everything else oil-based), and this became a more attractive option at that point. When I was at Target in L.A. I didn't really look around much, I grabbed one of the ones I knew would be there that wasn't bad. I'm glad to see it has caught on, though -- it seems like good stuff to me.

They came in a while after you left, but before I did (I think).

There was a big "green push" a while back (when I was still working there). There was endcap of Clorox-branded "Earth friendly" cleaners, as well as more attention paid to the 7th Gen stuff.

I've switched to the stuff where it's practical.

Random offer - a good friend (and fraternity brother) of mine lives in Austin. He and his wife also bike frequently. If you're interested, I'm happy to pass your info along.

I keep very nearly considering going out on occasion. Maybe someday, I'll actually consider it... I can always dream. >.>

Yeah, feel free to pass along info -- I'm already planning out some short rides for the weekend, as I can't get out of work before dark at the moment.

It depends on who you ask. I've used Seventh Generation stuff for years, it's good products. And wearing my PR hat, I think it's awesome that the Great Law and some of the basic concepts of the Haudenosaunee have entered the homes and minds of so many - it makes my job easier, later. The company does a lot of cool things too, like fund Greenpeace.

That being said, I don't believe any of the profits come back to any of the Haudenosaunee communities, and this is problematic. I doubt the company ever asked permission to use the phrase as their name. I've heard it referenced as one example of ongoing cultural theft, which causes the Onondaga to be so close-lipped about the rest of their ceremonies and beliefs.

Hm. I wonder if the company could be convinced to donate some of their profit to the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force?
