Metal Gear?

I should have known that I wasn't going to like Metal Gear Solid 4. The signs were all there: the long cutscenes, the difficult game mechanics, the tangled storyline. The only thing more infuriating that 3rd grade regurgitated preaching about the military industrial complex, is 3rd grade regurgitated preaching about the military industrial complex packaged alongside a cliche-embracing anime storyline about a guy called "solid snake" who isn't actually a porn star but in fact a special secret operative guy who fights giant robots and other dudes in victorian costumes with chick-hair called "revolver ocelot", rolls around in oil cans, talks to robot-camcorders and monkeys and reads playboy to settle his stomach ( ... )

I really think the game was held back by its predecessors. Imagine it without the call backs, references, needless cameos, and the incessant need to wrap EVERYTHING up in one nice little package. The previous games were more of a burden than anything else, especially when you consider how much new ground they covered.

Did you play through the other three?

MGS1 only. I'm not a fan of the games, but I'm also not an anti-fan, for what that's worth. I know a lot of people are really into the story, and I think that's totally fine. For me, I couldn't accept it for what it was, and maybe I just wasn't "meant" to.
