The outside of the house was so innocent at first glance.

It was taken care of so well that the white coat on its body still looked fresh. The green shingles on the roof blinked happily in the sun and the blue door was cracked open, inviting the weary to rest inside. The freshly cut lawn and the rose trellis clinging cheerily to the side of the building accented its beauty, its cozy suburban feel.

It was almost enough to make you forget about the bars on the windows.

The window bars - a blemish on an otherwise perfect picture. They weren’t there originally - you could tell from the hasty installation and peculiar placement. There were even some on the doors. In such a lovely neighborhood, why would you bars on the windows?

The bars could be taken out. But there was still something amiss, something disquieting about the two-story wonder. The house seemed to peer at you, sizing you up, judging you for some contest where there were no winners, only losers; a contest that you didn’t enter but were chosen for anyway. It glanced up and down the street, slowly breathed, tasting the air for something.

The door banged open and closed in the wind.

There were stories about this house. But nothing about the home’s façade revealed anything about the gruesome tales -

Until the first splash of red paint on a blue door began reflecting its heinous nature - inside, and out.

All of the carpet had to be torn out. Every last piece, from floor of the dining room to the coverings on the stairs. All of it had to go.

The fire damage was only in a small section of the house, a trail leading from the basement door, up the stairs, and into the master bedroom. But the carpet on the ground was the original carpet, probably installed in the late fifties-early sixties (in remarkable condition at that), and the exact matching shade was no longer manufactured. So all of it had to be replaced before the house was put on sale.

The carpet was peeled away from the ground slowly, revealing bit by bit the hardwood floor underneath. This, along with painting the front door red, was the only renovation of any kind being done to the house. The previous owner had kept it tip top shape and didn’t really need to do anything to the property, but paid for two things: the door and the carpet.

The carpet the workers understood. But the door? That was something else. They didn’t linger on it.

As soon as the last piece of carpet was removed, a horrible stench seemed to rise from the floorboards, filling every corner of the house. It was thick and rotten, smelling of some unknown death. They all coughed and gagged, but no matter how hard they searched, they couldn’t find the smell’s source. It was phantom, eluding the workers, teasing them, taunting them, and leading them around in circles.

They wanted to leave. Right then and there, they were ready to back their bags and go. But there was a job to be done, and so, as quickly as they could, the new carpet (a close shade to the original color) was put down, piece by piece. As they worked, one man checked the basement for the repulsive perfume. He ran out moments later, shaking and pale.

There was something wrong with this house, they murmured amongst themselves. Something terribly wrong.

As soon as the last square was set the smell went away and the workers left as fast as they could, tripping over each other in their haste. Around them the house breathed and shook with laughter, inviting them to return, come back, to sleep in the monsters belly; to rest inside forever and to never, ever leave again.
