The woman’s arms were warm and gentle, and Kristen could do nothing but squeeze tighter and pray with all her might, with all her heart, that this was real; not some illusion, not some fantasy, not some filthy nightmare but real. She could smell the shampoo in the woman’s hair (fresh strawberries) and the texture of her jacket felt satisfyingly rough against her skin. All of it, the warmth, the smell, the touch - all of it was too good to be true. A dream.
She should let go. She should back away, demand that the trick be revealed, for the magician to show the deadly ace up his red and green sleeves - but she couldn’t. Her thoughts were swimming around in a delightful way, a gentle high brought about without chemicals or smoke. If she wanted, she could stay this way forever. She would never have to dream or scream ever again. She could just stay here, in the woman’s arms, smelling strawberries instead of metal and flame.
She had feeling the woman would let her if she could.
Kristen was hugging a complete stranger. And she didn’t think she ever wanted to let go.
