As all of you are doubtlessly aware by now,
every bridge into DC from NoVa will be shut down to personal vehicles from 3pm on the 19th through until 7pm on the 20th. Also closed to personal vehicles? 395 north to DC...the whole damn thing, from Springfield to the 14th street bridge. Add to that 66 East, from the beltway to the Roosevelt Bridge.
VA Residents are a bit put out. But, as No6 pointed out when the news broke: um, once you get across the bridges, you're at the security zone. There's nowhere to go. The only bridge that seems slightly excessive might be including the Chain Bridge over at 123, but seriously, the bridge is about as wide as my pinky. Thousands of VA Residents all having the same "Oh I'll just sneak across that bridge no one else remembers exists" all at the same time would probably cause the fucker to collapse.
Another vicious rumor that's gaining traction is no trucks or deliveries into the district from 12:01am on the 19th through 12:01 am on the 21st. This is from our Shop Manager, who heard it from his contact at National Events, who heard it from....well, I don't know who. Whether it means no deliveries just around the 50-block security zone, into NorthWest in general, or into the entire damn District of Columbia was not specified.
So what happens when a Special Event company needs some last minute supplies? Let's say they suddenly need another 100 feet of rubber matting and gaff tape? They run short of zip and tap, and no techs have any in their cars, since no one drove in? Or when Will says "Oh no, I know which multi is the 208v and which is the 120amp, I don't need to label them!" and then plugs all your S4s into the 208v and blows 12 lamps?
What about that client who swore she wanted red-ish gel for her 90 uplights, so here you are with 12 kinds of red gel, and then she arrives, and says "Oh, no, really, I need it to be Raven's Purple?
What will they do?
Well, never fear, because Barbizon has come up with the brilliant notion of setting up a "Satellite Supply Shop" out of the loading dock at the back of the Newseum, on C Street near Pennsylvania. I received the advert email from them this morning.
I couldn't help it. I emailed Stevie and asked: "Lemonade Stand style? Or will you be renting a chuck wagon?"
She emailed back: "Fishmonger!"
So I invite you now to picture with me the image of Stevie and Jenn walking up and down C street NW with trays of expendables strapped to their shoulders bellowing out: "FRESH GAFF! E-TAPE!" and "GETCHER GEL! STOCK GOBOS!"
