Between one thing and another, I feel like it might not be a bad idea to save things whole cloth rather than bookmark them. Like, I knew Geocities was going down, but didn't save the pages I used to frequent, and now they're gone. I've seen whole websites disappear, journals deleted, forums taken down... The Wayback Machine doesn't catch everything. So whenever I see stuff like this, it's worrisome. :(
*nods* Yeah, I did that with the comms I help mod, too. There are so many other LJs I'm worried about, though. Just a handful from going through my flist: rayne_y_daze, maddogs991, bits_fic_bits, highwaymiles and, ironically, fandom_counts. Tons more people whose presence and work might be lost. :(
Any idea if this applies to paid accounts? I have one of the lifetime memberships on my other account, but haven't logged in in a while (can't decide if I want to delete it and change this username to that one, or just keep it for archival's sake).
There was no distinction made between paid, plus, or basic, as far as I could see -- but I'd like to think a lifetime membership means just that... (That might be naivete talking, mind.)
I don't know if they're doing serious backpedaling, but the article you linked now says they will only be deeming accounts "inactive" if they've been idle for 24 months AND don't have any posts other than the original welcome post. i.e. Accounts that were created but never used to post anything.
Makes me wonder about accounts like mine that are only used to make comments, but fortunately I've made a number of fake posts over the years! :D
Of course, now that I'm actually practicing my reading skills, I can see that you already know of that option, but I still thought I'd point out that that is the official line now.
