Question for my Cosplaying friends...

My boyfriend, mikebrown0424 , and I have been making plastic water guns and nerf guns into seriously bad ass looking cosplay weapons for our Browncoat costumes for DragonCon and I'm thinking of making an Etsy store and offering some for sale.  I'm thinking $30-50 for the ones pictured here and here and around $60 for the shotgun sized ones.  (You can't see all ( Read more... )

The second one of those pics looks fantastic. I remember spray-painting water pistols in college to make them look like real guns (which would probably get me arrested for carrying them in the street now, but not then). Unfortunately the spray paint didn't take to the plastic too well, and used to leave my hands black XD

Your prices sound thoroughly reasonable to me, but I run at the indulgent end of fandom sometimes.

We used spray paint as a base and it's working really well. I think it's because of the type, it's this textured metallic black that looks AWESOME, even before we do anything to it.

Thanks for the compliment! It looks even better in person, so knowing it looks good in the picture is a relief.

Yeah the prices seemed reasonable to me too, but I wanted other people's opinions too, the last thing I want is to make a bunch of them and not be able to sell them. LOL!

I just realized I'd never responded to you! Sorry! Thanks for the advice, I'll look into those sites, and the commission thing is a good idea. I was planning on doing something like that, but hadn't come up with a good way of going about it.

And yes, I am really lucky to have Mike, he's a sweetheart and thanks to him and a friend I can actually do group cosplays! Woot! (We're doing a Browncoat crew and the main characters in Rob Thurman's AWESOME Cal Leandros series and MAYBE Green Hornet and Kato if we get the money/time.)

Those look awesome!
If you decided to open an Etsy store I'd say you'd definitely sell well. You could try looking up other cosplay items similar to yours and checking what their selling price is. That's always worked for me.
Are you just going as Browncoats or are you certain cast members?

Sorry it took so long! I forgot I didn't respond to you! anidawehi May 21 2011, 18:15:25 UTC
Thank you! It means a lot to hear that from such a good artist! And thanks for the advice, I'll do that.

We're just going as Browncoats, our RPG characters specifically, but no one is going to know that but us. We're also doing the Cal Leandros cast, which is going to be FUN. Rob sorta gang-pressed me to be Niko, a friend of mine is Cal, and my boyfriend Mike is going to be Rafferty, with a stuffed wolf for Catcher. We'll see how well turning Niko and Cal female goes over. LOL!

LOL! No problem. I'd forgot that you'd forgotten with the forgetting of the forgotten...ness.
XD

Man, I want to go to DragonCon! If I can, (I think I've said this before, but what the heck) I'm going as an Auphe! We can do battle. Maybe I'll make it with a detachable jaw, lol.
And then I'm going to tackle Adam Baldwin.
Probably sans the Auphe costume, though. Not sure he'd get that. Wouldn't want to traumatize the poor guy.
...Too much anyway.
Sadly, it's starting to look like I might not be able to make it, but I'm still holding out hope!

If you get to go to D*C let me know and we'll meet up and stalk Adam Baldwin together! I bet you would make an awesome Auphe!
