Les Miserables

I've been toying over the idea of this entry for a while, and now that I have two other things I should be working on, and I'm making a sort of half-assed attempt in the New Year to write more even if no one gives a shit about what I have to say, I thought it would be a good time to write it.

A Love Affair with Les Miserables )

So, um, can't comment intelligently on most of the '98 version, but at least in some versions, the bishop lives with his sister, who's a little more worldly/attached to the silver/skeptical of Valjean for running with it. So that might be your mystery non-nun! :)

thanks for the comment. I kind of wish I had read the book, or I guess I should, but I guess since it's such an immense story most of the art of the movies or shows comes down to how they streamline and condense it. Maybe the 1998 version thematically is totally different from the book, but it works on its own so well that I think that accomplishment is worth something on its own.

It's nice to know that those weird mishaps are just loyal to the source material rather than mistakes on their own. And maybe it's just a zeitgeist thing, but jhc characters dying of broken hearts is like the most maudlin thing ever. Why was he brokenhearted??? He did everything he set out to ugh

Well, he's pretty old by that time, and had a rough life. But he's brokenhearted because after he told Marius about his criminal past, Marius starts subtly trying to separate him and Cosette. Marius also wrongly thinks Valjean killed Javert, since Javert was never heard from after Valjean went to supposedly kill him. Eventually, Marius finds out that Valjean isn't a murderer and saved Marius's life and he and Cosette go to find Valjean, but Valjean is already ill and dying.

lol omg I would have burned something ie the book if I got through 2000 pages just for an ending I literally couldn't read. What a mess!

and honestly I only did this because I am that bored, I want to work 60 hours a week and not be a part-time loser so I will pretend by writing 20 page livejournal entries!
