The Footy on the Telly

With no Canada and no Poland in the World Cup, I am forced to find another, albeit tenuous, ethnic link to the sporting event that is always most exciting after the quarter finals.

Yes kids, I am 1/16 Italian.

And thank god - could you imagine if the Azzuri had lost?

What a breathtaking game tonight.

(moose_ronin, I thought I heard you cheering too...)

I'm all kinds of divided on this one.
Shall i root for Italy? Germany? Croatia? England?
I've many options, it seems.

(Yep, i'm a mutt.)

But agreed; that was good stuff.

Yes! I could SO imagine that!
As far as I know, I don't have any genetic links to any country but Germany (there is a tiny chance of a link to Poland but that obviously doesn't help here). So it is tragic. Tragic!
118 minutes of 1500 cheering coworkers around me, then, suddenly, COMPLETE silence. For a really, really long time. Except maybe for the faint sound of hundreds of football fans' hearts breaking simultaneously.

I'm not an England fan, but that was exactly the sentiment here a few days ago. Heartbreak.

What was sadder, I thought, was the fact that Beckham resigned as captain on the back of such an unsuccessful World Cup campaign. In spite of his annoying family, I really admire the guy.

But the Italy vs. Germany game, despite the result, was the most riveting sporting action I've witnessed in a long time, mainly because the two teams were evenly matched.
