[He can't help but hear the mention of random encounters, quests, and other such things, and feels compelled to add his own two cents.]

I would really hoe they don't start doing random monsters, because I'm not sure if I could handle any on my own, especially without a weapon or skills....

The fastest way to a weapon and skills is to grind for experience and gold! You won't get anywhere very fast by avoiding the monsters.

But... I lost a bunch of my levels and all my skills here, and I don't think any amount of grinding is going to get them back. And it's a reset, I don't even have the bonuses if it was a properly done!

Anyway, there's no decent weapons to buy, and I can make money by going to a job.

There's got to be someone who sells weapons in this place. How do they expect us to deal with the wandering monsters that I haven't seen yet for some as yet unexplained reason?

[Low! Thine are confronted by a little girl! *Cute battle music*]

"Why would there be a randomized monster encounter? Or dream avatar?"

How else would I gain experience points or receive my latest sidequest?

"Experience points? Sidequest? I know I'm new here, but, I don't think this is a computer RPG."

My dear, life itself is simply one big role playing game. We all play a variety of roles every day, and the universe operates according to an inscrutable set of rules that govern our everyday lives. The secret to power is learning and mastering them, and the most basic of the basics is knowing how best to gain experience points. Anyone could tell you that much.

"Random monster encounter"? Sorry, this is Mayfield, not Dungeons and Dragons.

Ah, so I have been planeshifted. I wonder if Fighter was playing with the Hypercube again.

[Well for all he knows, maybe you ARE a D&D character. He's met stranger people in this town.]

I guess so, man. Though, the rest of us think it's inter-dimensional kidnapping.

Unlikely. If it were kidnapping, wouldn't I at least have some memory of the kidnappers themselves? And who could they possibly ransom me back to, especially considering I've been stripped of my equipment and magic. I daresay I would be worth even less than a starting character.

[Before leaving the house, Red Mage may notice a boy posed lazily in the living room. He looks at Red Mage, then at a family photo on the endtable, then back at Red Mage.]

Dammit.

Hail, fellow traveler! Tell me, what kingdom are we in? I seem to have woken up somewhere unfamiliar.

yournewoverlord February 8 2011, 17:58:48 UTC
It's not really a kingdom. They've got a whole pseudo-democratic setup. It's totally pointless.

Democracy has its uses, but I've found it tends to end in bloody coups.

[Bang overheard parts of Red Mage's musing while randomly exploring Mayfield. CUE THE ALL-TOO-FAMILIAR RANDOM BATTLE SFX AND WIPE.]

A true man and hero needs no equipment! They need no direction! Their goals come from themselves, and their power comes from their own skill and their BURNING SOUL OF PASSION!

Perhaps not where you come from, but in my world upgrading equipment and pursuing sidequest after sidequest is the surest route to power!

Reply

furikazan February 9 2011, 04:02:02 UTC
Oh, having equipment definetly helps... But the only thing I need to upgrade is my training!

And my attack names.

Reply

animalhusbandry February 9 2011, 04:04:08 UTC
Well, I certainly can't argue with you there. There's a wealth of bonus experience to be had in training one's skills, and the aesthetics of a well-chosen attack name can't be disregarded either.
