NOTE: This is in first person, but I didn't write it. A friend of a friend wrote this. I don't have a letter written now because I'm kind of confused about the situation but I'm in the process of sorting all the information out. If you'd like to give it a shot and write a sample letter for us, go for it. :)

I am sure some of you have heard about the recent tragedy involving my mom and her yellow lab puppy, Ms. Lilly. For those of you who don't know the full story I included a brief description of what occurred below in an effort to ask for help from all of you.

PLEASE DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO CONTRIBUTE- this is simply a request for those who are interested in animal abuse issues and I will not feel slighted in the least by those of you who choose not to get involved. I just thought it was worth bringing it to your attention and it never hurts to ask.

In late June, my mother's 9 month old lab, Ms. Lilly, was playing in my mom's backyard. She caught the scent of a deer and bounded after it, chasing it over to a neighbor's property. The neighbor then fired three rounds of a high powered deer rifle into Lilly, killing her. (keep in mind deer season is months away) My mom heard the shots and instantly knew what had happened. She drove to the neighbor's property to confront him. He lied to her and said that he had only shot at a stray dog. (he was also wearing bloody clothes)

My mom kept interrogating him and eventually a semi-truth came out. He had shot Lilly but swore that he didn't know it was her dog and that he thought it was a stray because she wasn't wearing a collar. Lilly always has a collar on- it's how she stays connected to her dog run. He told my mom that he had already buried Lilly's body. My mom did not believe him and after searching found Lilly's broken body that he had drug down the hill and thrown into the bushes. Later, he confessed to taking her collar off too.

2 months prior to this incident, Lilly had chased another deer on to adjacent property from the evil neighbor's. As my mom was chasing and whistling for Lilly to come, the evil neighbor emerged from the thick woods next to his property with a large gun and told my mom that he tried to fire off a few rounds at the dog but didn't have enough time. He hated dogs chasing deer and would shoot her the next time he caught her. He knew exactly who's dog she was.

This coming from a neighbor knows the full trauma my mother and the neighborhood has suffered through this past year with the murder of a fellow neighbor-also involving the shooting of Cody, my mom's chocolate lab. (he made it and is doing well!) This evil neighbor even came to the wake my mother held at her home in remembrance of Mike.

The police are now involved but it may shock you to find that shooting a dog is a misdemeanor crime. Basically, this bastard will only get a fine. There is a chance that he can be charged with a class 3 felony which would prohibit his right to own guns. The chance of a felony charge is dictated by the D.A . who is assigned this case. If he feels there is enough evidence to support the felony charge only then will this mad man actually face appropriate punishment for his dog murder.

At this point, I fear for the safety of all who reside in the neighborhood. Cruelty to animals is a common sign used by police to identify those who are possibly headed for larger, more violent crimes. In an effort to draw attention to this situation my mom is asking every animal lover she can find to write a short note to the D.A of Grants Pass in a hopes of drawing attention to this cause. She has been advised that it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease and has taken this to heart.

If you would like to write a letter or short note to express your outrage or sickness of the violent brutality this evil neighbor has used, please contact me and I will get you the specifics. Or if you would like to forward this e-mail to others you may know who would also be interested in contributing their two cents on animal abuse please feel free to do so. The more the merrier! My hope is that we are able to provide so many opinions and concerns from 100's of people that the D.A. will feel pressured to force the felony and not plea bargain with the misdemeanor.

Sorry to ramble on but this is a cause extremely close to my heart. I grew up in this neighborhood and this is the only mom I have- I will do anything in my power to make both safe and happy. Any input any of you can offer to motivate the D.A. will be appreciated but again, please keep in mind that there is no obligation.

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I have just been informed of the grisly case of Bob Lenander (Case# 046274), who resides in Grants Pass, Oregon. He brutally murdered a puppy who was playfully chasing a deer through Mr. Lenander’s backyard. He fired three rounds with a high-powered deer rifle into the puppy’s body. He then, allegedly, dragged the puppy’s corpse down a hill and threw it in bushes, taking of the collar beforehand. After this, he lied to the dog’s owner about shooting her dog, but confessed after her insistent interrogation. It is in my understanding that this man is merely being charged with a misdemeanor, instead of the felony charge he deserves. Please seek proper justice for this murderer and don’t let him off with just a fine. Keep in mind that most people who act cruelly unto animals will usually go on to harm or kill humans.

Thanks for your time,
