So... things have been good so far during the 13 days that have passed of 2010. I got to hang out with
cyanwitch for New Year's, and I played lots of Tales of Vesperia.
I'm rather in love with all the ToV characters. Yuri is awesome, Estelle is adorkable, Karol is just too cute, Rita is so much funking win, Raven is an amazing perverted old guy, and Judith is really pretty and kicks ass.
The Tales of games have made me into a multi-shipper, and ToV is no exception. Estelle and Rita have Les Yay up the wazoo, Rita and Karol are kinda shippy, Rita and Raven may be my OTP, Judith and Raven have lots of fun moments, Judith and Rita have their share of Les Yay, and there's a bunch more. Yuri and Estelle are a little shippy, but I prefer Estelle and Flynn definitely. Especially now that I'm on my second playthrough and I'm catching all the hints about things. Like Raven's past. I keep pointing at him and going "SLIP UP! I SEE IT NOW!!!"
If you couldn't tell, my favorite characters are Rita (15 year old, genius mage and blastia researcher) and Raven (35 year old survivor of the Great War and Face-Heel-Face Turn).
ToV is definitely different from many other JRPGs, at least in terms of the major villain. He's not exactly a "bad guy" like most other villains are, and he's not crazy either. He's also a silver haired bishonen, and he's not doomed. Just a little vengeful. And you really feel bad for a lot of the characters when you begin to piece together the plot and the background behind everything. I would personally like some more information about things like the Great War that happened 10 years previous to the game, but I'm hoping to get that in the second playthrough.
Now, on to other things! Classes have started as of Monday, and I've been to all that I have so far. Here's my thoughts...
First of all, Japanese 2. It's the last semester of Japanese that is offered here, but it looks like it's going to be a blast. We're in a classroom that we haven't been in before (though I've been in there for my Film class my first semester here), and about half the room is empty because we don't have that many people. Maybe... 15 total? 15-20. The classroom holds about 40, I would estimate. Regardless, it's going to be a fun class, full of both old, familiar faces (who make you lose the game, damn it, Aaron!) and new faces. I'm definitely excited about the final project, which is a skit. Last year's skits were HILARIOUS, so I'm hoping that we can follow in their footsteps as well.
I'm also taking Modern British Lit, which has a bunch of people that I know in it. Sally, Ashley, Jimmy, Anna, Mary, JT... It should certainly be interesting. We're focusing, at least at the beginning, on a period during which people were dealing with the questions of religion and science, when people's faiths were being tested and when people were searching for the ideal while science was progressing and making it harder to just believe in things that science was shooting down. Sounds like my kind of thing.
AP 3300 is a required class for all Art & Performance majors, and is labeled as "The Elements of Art and Performance." Sounds boring right? Yeah, I thought so too, until I met the professor, Fred. He's a crazy theater geek who has played around in all forms of art and performing, and the assignments that we've been giving so far inspire me rather than bore me. I mean, we're supposed to recreate A Midsummer Night's Dream. I'm kinda really excited about that. Looks like it's going to be a ton of fun.
And speaking of Shakespeare brings us to my next class... which is Lit 3320, Shakespeare! Yes, all Shakespeare, all the time! I'm really excited! And we actually get to play certain characters from Shakespeare's works on this online community thing for class. When we got the assigned characters, I had Hippolyta from A Midsummer Night's Dream, but since no one else had been assigned Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet (my favorite classical character EVER) I asked to switch. I am really excited about this. There are people playing Romeo, Juliet, and Tybalt, so I'm sure I'm going to have fun with them, as well as with characters from other plays. So yes, excitement.
My last class is HUMA 3300, another required class for AP (as well as Art History, Historical Studies, and Lit majors). It's titled "Reading and Writing Texts", which also sounds boring, but I'm glad I moved sections so that I could take the class with Clay Reynolds (whose one other class is a graduate level class called "Creating Novels." Yes, I am jealous of them). He's not as crazy as my AP 3300 teacher, but he uses the most interesting words, and he's really good at speaking and putting together interesting phrases. Our theme for the class is the myth of "The West", focusing mostly on the concept of the West that solidified between 1870 and 1890. It's definitely a part of history that gets only a glance during High School and Middle School, and it's one part that I'm not that familiar with, so it looks like it will be a lot of fun. We basically did a summary of the entirety of my mom's US History class in about 2 hours in that class yesterday, which was really amusing, but fun for me, since I know that part of US history forwards and backwards.
But yeah, my classes all look like a ton of fun, and I'm really excited about them. I've got every class but Japanese with someone from my Creative Writing class from last semester (HUMA 3300 with Ciro, AP 3300 with Ellen, Shakespeare with Addison, and Modern Brit Lit with Jimmy and Anna), and, therefore, I have at least one person in each class that I already know, typically two or more.
Looks like this semester is starting off awesome. I'm also going to try to be more organized, starting with getting a planner and keeping track of assignments. I'm going to get books and a planner and other such things today, once I get back from Japanese. I meant to go run and do stuff this morning, but... well... I didn't. ^^ Oh well.
Alright, time to get ready for my first class of the day, and then it'll be shopping time! Yahoo!
