oh boy, awesome, I got the new UP blu-ray, let's put it in and watch the Dug short before Law & Order: SVU comes on
Your version of TotalMedia Theatre is unable to play this disc. You may purchase and enter an activation code to upgrade TotalMedia Theatre. What would you like to do?
...so this blu-ray thing is basically a scam, huh?

I've yet to buy a Blu-Ray drive because I figure the reason I'm buying'em is to play them in my home theatre setup, anyway. If I do get one, it's only so I can rip them into AVIs for my media server/M4Vs for my iWhatsit.
Also, yeah, I'm using a PS3 for my HT setup. What can I say? It works.

We have a Sony standalone player that's just great on Blu, but it's awfully tetchy about what DVDs it likes to play. A friend of mine has a brand new TV that supposively you can pop a thumb drive into an just play from that - no fussing around with disks at all. Seems like that might be the way to go. I'm kind of getting tired of all my DVRs piling up everywhere.

OTOH, you'll STILL be frustrated because the fools refuse to 'lock down' the standards, so you will run into problems where your brand new BD disk won't play right until you update the firmware.
(See: hardcore James Bond fans and the screaming over those discs)
And don't get me started on the potential evils of having your standalone player connected to your broadband, the fun of vanishing BD-Live 'extras' content, the annoyance that while BD discs are only semi-region coded, sadly BD-Live content IS region specific...
