So the idea just came to me. Weird, as I'm really not a Tobias fan. But it's the first Animorph fic I've written in awhile. Constructive crit. would be great!

*~*~*
It's no secret that after the war, Tobias cracked.
Although, really? He hadn't been quite right since the thing with Taylor.
No, scratch that. He hadn't been quite right since he got trapped as a hawk.
Had Tobias ever been normal?
Regardless, after the war and Rachel's death, Tobias went bat-shit insane. Jake was too screwed up to deal with him, Cassie was too nice, and Ax had his own stuff to do. So, of course, it fell to me to make sure Tobias didn't kill himself or anything.
It was easy enough to find out where he'd hidden himself. There were several Tobias fan sites on the web. One site in particular (saveourbird.com) posted regular "Tobias Sightings". And so, after an awful day of hiking through the forest, I found him. I morphed to wolf and climbed into his territory.
Of course, Tobias spotted me early on. [Who is it?] I heard. [Cassie?]
I demorphed. "Marco."
[Go away. Or, you know what? I'm leaving.]
I rolled my eyes. "Get back here, you fucking coward."
Maybe it was the swear word, or maybe it was the insult, or maybe he was just really tired of only talking to himself and random hikers. [I'm not a coward.]
Ah-hah. A nerve. "Of course you are. Hiding away in a morph..."
[It's not a morph!]
"A *morph*...see, that's your problem, Tobias. You. Are. Not. A. Hawk."
[I've had this argument. Is that all you came to say?]
"God, so testy! I'm here to help you!" I sat down on a rock. I still couldn't see him, and I was getting tired of talking to the air. "Can't you come down here?"
[I'm hoping you'll get the hint and go away.]
"Not a chance, buddy. I'm doing my altruistic thing for the year. Karma and all that."
[I don't want your pity.]
I had to laugh at that. "Pity? See, that's your problem, Tobias. You've got this persecution complex. 'Oh, poor me, no one loved me and I'm trapped as a bird and my girlfriend died. Woe, agony.' Get over yourself."
[You...you...you have no idea what I've been through!]
And then I could see him. He flew down to the tree branch in front of me.
"Planning on gouging my eyes out?"
[Screw you, Marco.]
"I don't know why I even bother. You think you're only person who lost someone in the war? Christ, she was Jake's cousin! And he lost his brother."
[His choice.]
"Oh, fuck you. You think he chose that? Lesser of the two evils, man. You'd rather the Yeerks had morphing capability? Rather Earth was enslaved?"
[There had to be another way.]
"Well, I didn't hear you coming up with any bright ideas." I rubbed my temples. This was so not worth the karma. "Morph. Human. Now," I said suddenly.
[Fuck off.]
"No, really. When was the last time you were human?"
[I'm not a human.]
"Yes, actually, you are. Well, and a little Andalite, too, but we don't talk about that because really? Eww."
I have no idea why Tobias listened to me. Boredom? It couldn't be that interesting being a hawk. Or maybe it'd just been too long since he'd had fingers.
He flew off the tree and landed next to me. The morph was ugly. Out of practice, I guess. "Happy now?"
Anyone else would have been scowling. Tobias was out of practice with emotion. His face was a blank state. I reached out and touched his cheek. He flinched away. "What are you doing?"
"Touching you," I said. I came closer and Tobias backed up until he was against the tree. "Feel this, Tobias. When was the last time someone touched you?"
"Go away," his voice wavered. And still, fear didn't show on his face. The blank stare was disconcerting.
"When was the last time you felt anything? Really felt something? Pain, grief. Hawks don't cry."
"Go away," he repeated. Already, his eyes were getting that pre-tear, wet-glassy look.
"No," I said simply. I reached out and pulled him into a hug. He struggled for a few moments, then relaxed into my grip. I was stronger, and he knew it. I could feel wetness on my shoulder, but he didn't sob or anything. Quiet tears.
He pulled back after a minute and I brushed the tears off his face. "She wasn't the only one who loved you, you know. We all care about you. I care about you."
He grimaced. "Stop it."
"No," I was so frustrated that I shook him a bit. His eyes widened. "I care about you. Stop this...waste. Waste of your life. Come back to reality."
"I'm not human. This is my reality."
I kissed him. I'm not sure why. Instinct. He reeled from the contact. "What..."
"This is reality, Tobias," I told him. I cupped his cheeks in my hand. "This is reality. Me. You. Jesus, have you ever gotten laid?"
"Stop," he moaned. I kissed him again, and this time he leaned into me. I tangled my hands in his long, wispy hair.
"I care about you," I whispered. "Come back."
"No," he said, but his voice shook.
"I love you," I said.
His eyes went wide, almost comically so. Then the boy in my arms started to demorph. I jumped back before he scratched me.
He flew away. "I'm coming back," I yelled.
Silence.
"I love you, you fucking bird-brain moron asshole."
Silence.
"You're not worth it," I said, but quietly. I turned and left.
I was already planning my next trip in.
