Snow in Winter: Original Fiction

Sep 13, 2009 00:20

So, here's some of that original fiction I've been talking about.  I'm not making much progress on the illustrations I *wanted* to do for it, so I'm posting the one I did manage to get done.

This is set in the world of Dark Rising, the original urban fantasy series Lois and I have been working on since high school.  The art and story below are ( Read more... )

Oh, WOW! What an introduction! I really like Snow's perspective on all things 'two-legs'. And Gavin is just adorable, both from the description and his portrait. He snores, heehee!

The wolf vs. vampire fight was awesome, and the level of detail helped me picture the action in my mind. Lots of blood good! :D

:D

Thank you! Snow and Gavin are among my favorite characters from that 'verse - she is SUCH a wolf, with a very wolfy disdain of human trivialities, and he is such a big cuddly teddy bear. His pack despairs, because Gavin's main ambition seems to be to grow up and become a DOG.

Thanks again for the review. I'm thinking about doing a couple more stories on Gavin and Snowy, and then there's the novella idea that features Snowy's older son, Chayce.

Yeeek! Kinda scary, but awesome. It was really interesting to read something from a wolf perspective. And now I have a totally adorable and super-fluffy mental picture of Gavin. *snugs him* :D

He is the seriously fluffy and snuggly one. You saw him in a Superman story, actually - he's the 'malamute mix' at Bisaha in "If It's Meant to Be". For a long time his life's ambition seems to be to become a dog - a big, cuddly, snuggly, loveable teddy bear of a dog. The only werewolf character in my mind who would enthusiastically lick a complete stranger's face - that's Gavin.

So sorry it took me so long to get back to this!

This was just awesome! I really loved the twist on the usual trope, having the werewolves be wolves first and foremost, and human second. The fight was pretty kickin', too. ^_~ Stupid vamp.

In coming up with Dark Rising, I had read a story that included a "backwards" werewolf - he was a wolf who turned into a man at the full moon. And I stumbled across the White Wolf roleplaying game "Werewolf: The Apocalypse", in which werewolf characters can be born wolves or humans, but what makes them werewolves is the ability to shift between those forms.

I liked the idea of a culture and community shared by humans and wolves, where both were full citizens and had their own unique perspectives. I've actually got a huge writeup of it I did for another site.

I'm glad you mentioned this because I somehow missed it. I'm more of a vamp person than a warewolf, but I love what you have so far!

This story series does have quite a few main characters that are vampires - mostly good guys, which I suppose Sontheimer is, even if he wouldn't describe himself as such.

This story is very good. I enjoyed the fight scene between the wolves and the vampire. And I must agree with Snow about the NyQuil. I too cannot stand the stuff and will only take under extreme duress. I like this story so much that I want more.

Thanks!

There will be more - there's a novella-in-progress that takes place slightly before this, and Gavin and Snow will get some more stories featuring them.

Snow gets her attitude toward medicine from me. I hate taking the stuff.
