bands i've seen play live in the last two weeks:

-Paul Weller
-Supergrass
-Dirty Pretty Things (twice)
-Happy Mondays
-The Enemy (twice)
-Graham Coxon
-Drew McConnell
-New Young Pony Club
-Athlete
-The View
-Fun Lovin' Criminals
-Reverend & The Makers
-Ed Harcourt

the abundance of bands was due to my attending two major charity concerts, one in Manchester (Versus Cancer) and another in London (Crisis Consequences). i have to add to that the mighty Dirty Pretty Things, who will never cease to amaze me with their adorable rubbishness (Palais de Tokyo, Crisis). in London they were joined by Paul Weller on stage for yet another rendition of "In the city" together. i will never tire of this version!  and i will never tire of seeing Paul Weller and his incredible live band, that includes not only Steve Cradock of Ocean Colour Scene, but also Steve Pilgrim, who i'm glad to hear from after he left The Stands in 2005. i was also delighted to see Supergrass again, and Mickey on good form, they are one of the v ery few bands that manage to maintain the same level of excitement as the years go by.

last weekend i was in London Town again, where i could catch up with The Courteeners on friday night, at the Camden Barfly. the little gig was short but tight and energetic, they're not the most ground-breaking band but they're very efficient, and i'll have them over any other posing-with-models-in-the-nme, keyboard-making-up-for-lack-of-melody bands any day of the week. after the gig i went to have a chat with Mark and i walked past the great Morrissey on the way out of their dressing room. random.

as usual i was staying with Babydoll, in Peckham, we visited the shops in Camden market and Rye Lane, and then we went to the Amersham Arms on saturday night, where we saw Belgian band Das Pop. i'd seen them already last year, supporting The Bishops in Paris. the singer Bent is amazing, he was in full "Ricky Wilson" mode, handing over his drumming duties to someone else to jump about on the tiny Amersham stage. needless to say he had the Londoners eating from the palm  of his hand in no time. we went home soaked to the bone with rain but it didn't matter cos we had Das Pop's sunny bright feelgood sunhsine pop in our ears.

on sunday i saw The Zombies with Sadie, who trekked down all the way from Sheffield for it. if you had told me, when i first heard that album ("Odessey and Oracle"), one of the most absolutely melodically perfect that has ever been committed to tape, that i would one day see it performed live in front of me in its entirety and in sequence, by the original band members, i would never have believed you. but it happened last sunday. it was one of the most gorgeous and inspiring live experience i've ever witnessed. we also had plenty of time to visit Spitalfields market and Brick Lane, with Sadie and Tom, was a great and funny thing to do on a sunday afternoon. we tried the more or less exotic food stalls (pain aux raisins, anyone?) and scoured the book and clothes stalls. we ended up at Rough Trade, for a more traditional sort of scouting for sound and vision. we also managed to squeeze in a drink down the Dublin Castle, and my little London trip was complete.
