Bought myself a Kindle. It arrived on Wednesday. As usual,I'm rushing into using it before completely understanding it.I think I'm going to lock away my credit card and lie down for a while.
Go you! I'm srsly thinking of getting one, too, for several reasons. It's lighter and thinner than a pb book - the only things that concern me are turning the pages and size of pages and buttons. Can you let me know how you get on? The smallness of the buttons is a concern, and I don't know anyone who has one for me to try. thank you, love! :D xxxx
The buttons are on the small side, and there are no numbers. The more expensive version comes loaded with a user's guide and two dictionaries, the Oxford Dictionary of English, and the New Oxford American Dictionary.Every time you switch off, there's a pic with a literary connection.I could have ordered books for it while it was in transit! As it was,I was still stumbling through the buying procedure when a book arived! And it doesn't have to be switched on to get downloads! The page turning bars are at both sides, forward and back on each side. You have to press firmly to turn, since the natural way to hold it is right where the bars are. From my reading of reviews, and from what I have seen of the guide, you cannot download from anywhere other than Amazon, but at the moment it's not a problem. The font size can be changed to pretty large, and the print is easy to read. So check Amazon for what you want, read reviews. If you can use a mobile phone with smallish buttons, you can probably use this.
Amazon have a lot of info on the Kindle, and you can download files from your own computer to the Kindle.I tried reading it,but I'm at that age where details don't stay in the memory.Lj user mirabile got one for her elderly mother, and everyone seems very happy with it,after some teething troubles.Mine is the £149.00 version, where everything is already set up for you, which, considering my technical knowledge,is just as well! There are plenty of reviews on the net which give you an idea of how it all works, along with all the \amazon detail. Good luck sorting it all out!
It's quite thrilling to have a new toy that's so easy to start, and I know I'll spend too much on downloads! But the Kindle is tied to Amazon, and you can't download from anywhere else,as I understand it. I might have to buy another reader for all my favourite fanfic.Do you have any experience that you can pass on to ismenin ,see comment above.
I have a Sony ereader and I only use it for fanfic. You can buy books for it but I never have, you can put your own files on it. I convert them into rtfs, use font size 16 and they're fine.
I do have to make sure the 'properties' on the file has the right name as it doesn't list the title I've given the file but uses that.
