I have always believed and or hoped that this was the main responsibility of a nurse. To help other human beings they come in contact with to grow, become safe, to be healthier and better than before.. When I started to read this chapter this is what I saw..
Therapeutic Communication is not only necessary but it is one of the most important jobs anyone will ever do as a nurse.
I agree with the Book for the most part when it says " The art of therapeutic communication does not come naturally it must be learned" , but only to a point. I honestly believe that you much first have a concern and empathy for human kind to be able to learn this very helpful tool in health care.
Successful therapeutic Communication includes both verbal and nonverbal communication and both are important to the process. You also have to pay attention to boundaries including personal space and a patient that does not want to talk.
Without Therapeutic communication a patient or client stops being another human being and becomes a number..this is a way for us to help them heal, open up and to deal with those situations they can not change, weather it be medically related or not.
There are so many benefits of this specific communication skill and it is not only to the patent.. we also benefit by knowing we helped someone if only a little to feel better about his or her situation, to know someone cares.
