trying to explain to 9 million Chinese people in this town that "Christmas is a CHRISTIAN holiday, and I'm not a Christian" is impossible. The Australians i'm friends with complain about getting wished a "happy thanksgiving" every year. For the Chinese there is Chinese and Foreign. They think: you are foreigner, so the holidays McDonals, KFC, pizza hut and Walmart sell me are YOUR holidays. I tried arguing, but it was pointless.
I asked my students what Christmas means to them, and they said mostly it means people in stores wear red hats and you give gifts to each other. So, they give me gifts. Chocolate, to be exact.
