Hotel in Brazil; Late evening

Private
Who: Anko and Urahara
Where: Hotel in Brazil
When: Late evening
Warnings: None.

The night air was refreshing to Urahara's numbing senses as he sat at the balcony of their hotel room. He had gone out there, and had been sitting here for a couple of hours while assuming that his roommates were currently asleep. They had been staying in a suite which conveniently had three separate bed rooms in it. Urahara figured if he was going to bring friends to Rio, he just assume splurge. Beside his chair, where he sat was a small table and atop it was a bottle of scotch and a small glass. He had gotten in the habit of having a couple of drinks before he even thought of sleeping. It was one he wished he hadn't have picked up, but nevertheless, he had, thus, he had to live it.

Anko lay awake in her bed, having tossed and turned about a million times. She didn't like the idea of sleeping while there was still so much to see. Add to that the fact she was still replaying her encounter with Orochimaru in her head. That was an almost certain recipe for being up all evening. She slipped out of bed noiselessly and stepped outside her room. In the balcony she caught a glimpse of Urahara-san having a drink. She padded over to him in an oversized white shirt and loose fitting black shorts. Maybe he'd let her join in the drinking, she thought with a grin. "Not tired," she asked suddenly to announce her arrival.

Urahara turned his head to the sound of the voice behind him. "Ah, Anko-san, can't sleep?" He returned her question without an answer.

She stepped out onto the balcony, passed him a ways to lean on the railing. Her feet slipped between the bars bellow and she glanced up into the sky, seeming to breathe in the air for a moment, just to taste the difference in it. "I never sleep on my first night in a new place. What's your excuse," her head turned around as she glanced at him over her shoulder.

"Well, I can't say it's the same for me. Back in December I was here for a good month," he replied and took a sip of his drink. His free hand moved to run his fingers through his light blonde hair. Of course he didn't have his hat on.

She laughed a little and looked forward again, her gaze unable tot ear from the scenery for very long. "That's right I almost forgot you've seen the world. But you're dodging my question Urahara-san." She really was curious to know what was keeping him awake and she figured there was no harm in pressing the point.

"I just usually have a have a hard time sleeping," he responded. He wasn't going to go into angsty detail to his new friend about how this trip was supposed to be his honeymoon, and how that fell through the roof due to unfortunate events. In fact, he wasn't even going to bother telling himself that, as he chose to ignore that fact, despite his new habit.

The answer was satisfying enough and she shrugged. "I bet you're missing your kitty," she mused, referring to Kuroko-chan whom she'd also met that day at the shop. Being oblivious to any other situation Urahara might be fawning over, she didn't see any harm in making such a statement.

"Ah, yes, I miss my Kuroko-chan lots. Eventually I will just have to have her start traveling with me. Though, I'm going to break her in slowly and have her only fly short distances at first."

"That's a good idea, I bet she'd like to see the world with you." Anko sounded kind of dreamy, the scene before her and the air in her lungs intoxicating. Her hair was down, spilled over her shoulders and being pushed around by short gusts which she enjoyed. She tried to imprint every moment here to memory. "So what do we have planned for tomorrow?"

"Well, what would you be most interested in doing?" he questioned. "I'm pretty sure sometime this week we'll be able to catch a parade. Parades in Rio are the most wonderful in the world in my opinion."

"Well I'll go with your recommendations," she said. "A parade sounds like fun. This whole place just seems like out of a story book," she said with an innocent kind of wonder that was really uncharacteristic of girls her age. But some part of Anko had never grown up and would likely never age.

An soft, amused chuckled escaped from his looks. "Ah, that sounds like a plan then. We'll definitely go sight seeing. Eventually, I'm going to take you both to see the largest statue of Jesus in the world."

"Oh yeah," she exclaimed. "I've heard of that!" She had seen it in arts and humanities books, never particularly paying much attention to something she didn't think she'd ever see in person. It was all a little surreal to her still, but it seemed fitting to visit the effigy of a spiritual symbol on her quest to find herself again.

"It's an interesting sight. And of course Rio has some of the best strip bars in the world too. So I will for sure drag Ukitake there."

She laughed out loud and turned, her lower back against the railing. "No way you'll leave me out of that," she exclaimed, almost indignant that he hadn't thought to invite her.

"Oh?" He tilted his head curiously. "I see, so you enjoy seeing the sights of other women don't you?" A mischievous grin crossed his lips. "I can be comfortable with that."

She shrugged and smiled. "I think that seeing all the sights Brazil has to offer is important." She winked and looked rather like an imp or a child plotting something dangerous. "Anyway I'm not going to let you guys go out unsupervised!"

"Ah yes, because Ukitake and I are quite the troublemakers," Urahara chuckled again. He then noticed that his glass was empty so thus he poor himself another, also making note that two more glasses and he'll have to buy him another bottle for tomorrow.

Her gaze settled on the bottle. "So I've noticed," she replied playfully. "Can I have some of that," and her head nodded towards the drink. She suspected he was cooler about letting young people ingest hard liquor than most men. It probably wouldn't make him nervous, but that was only an assumption.

Urahara paused in mid sip and eyed her. He brought the glass away from his mouth and handed it to her. "Hai, I most likely drank too much tonight anyway."

She reached out, leaning forward a bit to take the glass from his hand. She took a few sips, being no stranger to the taste or the burn that chased the liquid as it went down her throat. "You sound like you've got a lot on your mind," she finally said her voice a little throaty from the drink.

"Ah, I most likely do," he replied. "Living alone can do that to a man eventually, I suppose."

"Well you're not alone, not now anyway," she smiled, referring of course to herself being readily available to lend an ear if needed.

"Ah," he simply vocalized in reply and leaned back more in the chair.

"I'm a good listener," she offered in case he'd missed the subtle hint.

"It's a rather bothersome thing to talk about."

"I don't mean to pry," she said, somewhat regretting that she'd pressed him for something he didn't really want to talk about. But now, like a cat, her curiosity was sparked and she likely had a bit of determination to find out what was bothering him so much. She turned again, her back to him as she glanced out at the scenery and nursed the drink.

He waved his hand in the air idly. "Yare, yare, you shouldn't worry about it. I take no offense. You also shouldn't be worry about an old man like myself either."

Anko laughed, seemingly getting over her initial discomfort at being so nosy. "You shouldn't call yourself an old man, you'll age before your time if you tempt the Fates that way."

"Oh it's most likely too late for that." He smiled some. "I don't expect to die old and grey as it is."

"No, you live a pretty full life." At least, from what she knew of him he seemed to have it all. Though there was something deeper that she picked up on, something he wasn't quite satisfied with. "At least, if I lived your life that's how I'd feel," she added in a rather simplistic analysis, for which she was notorious.

"Despite what it seems," he replied. "I'm only merely surviving."

"Tch," she made a noise with her teeth. "I bet anyone would love to survive like this," she exclaimed without realizing how brutal it might be. She really did stumble around in conversations with a very naive regard for feelings. But it was part of her open nature.

"Believe me, I much rather not have it." His finger idly ran around the brim of the bottle. He was considering finishing it straight from the bottle.

Her head turned back to glance at him again, over her shoulder, just as she had before. Only this time her expression was confusion mingled with disbelief. "You're kidding. What kind of life do you want instead?"

"A boring and uneventful one. Mediocre."

She half turned, her head to one side in wide-eyed amazement at the answer. That came out of left field. After a few silent moments, she burst out in peals of laughter which had probably woken a few neighbors. "But that's easy! Everyone can have a boring life, just stop doing stuff," she said when her laughter had died down. "We can trade," she winked, though she really didn't wish her crazy existence on anyone. She'd made a mess of things as it was.

"Easier said than done," Urahara insisted. "After all, when you're born into a certain life, it tends to follow you around no matter how hard you try to escape it or run away from it, or cover it up with a shady smile and fisherman's hat."

She smiled, genuinely pleased by his answer because it was, after all, very true. "I suppose that's right. We have to play the hand we're dealt. But you could find a way to settle down if you really wanted to."

"No." His eyes narrowed at her. "I can't."

Anko raised a brow, still not quite able to figure him out. Her gaze remained locked on him for a while, before she tore it away to turn back to the night sky. "That's a tough break," she finally said to fill the silence.

"Extremely tough. But I suppose I'm used to it."

"I'm sure you'll find your way out someday," she mused, speaking more about herself than about her predictions for his future. She seemed a little spacey all of a sudden.

He didn't respond to that and simply closed his eyes and leaned further back in the chair.

"Well, I should probably leave you alone," she said after a while. "I'm probably a handful at this hour," she turned to face him for the third time and quickly swallowed what was left in her glass.

"Ah, I don't mind the company. It's a welcome little change."

"I bet I'm not as quiet as Kuroko-chan though, huh," she asked with a quizzical expression. "I lied when I said I was a good listener, I'm really terrible."

"Well, it's fine. I really didn't give you much to listen too anyway."

Another giggle and she leaned forward to set the empty glass down. "No, I enjoy your company," she said rather truthfully. Although she wasn't sure how good she was as a companion.

"Well, could. Things could get troublesome on this little vacation if you didn't, Anko-san." He peeked of his eyes open to look up at her.

She laughed and nodded. "That's true. I suppose I wouldn't have come if I hadn't liked you right off the bat. So lucky for you I did."

"Very lucky," he mused with a smirk.

She might have blushed if she was drunker, but as it was the tipsy effect simply made her take on a proud countenance, as if she'd heard it all before. And she had. Anko was pleased, however, that he still seemed to be receptive to her despite having drudged up things in him he likely did not want to discuss. "Sure you're not tired yet," she finally asked.

"I'll most likely fall asleep here tonight," he replied.

"That's a little uncomfortable, isn't it," her head canted to one side and she looked clearly disturbed by the prospect.

"I usually sleep in chairs."

"That is no good for your back Urahara-san. It will give you bad posture," she lectured. Not that she slept in the finest of beds, sometimes she woke up on floors!

"Ah. Beds tend to be a bit too cold for me though."

"Yeah if you're by yourself, I guess they are," she said without really thinking about it and not seeing the inappropriateness of the comment. She was simply being honest. And it didn't help that she was slightly loopy from the drink which was now taking a light effect on her.

"That's usually the case."

She nodded in response. If her statement had bothered him, she might never know because it seemed a perfectly natural deduction to make, in her eyes. "Well it's warm out tonight, maybe you should lay out on a sheet here and sleep." It sounded like fun to her, sleeping under the stars in a foreign part of the world. Although she insisted her use a sheet and not the chair.

"I don't think the ground is much better for you than a chair," he mused.

"At least your back is straight. I've done it a few times myself." Out of necessity more than by accident, but she'd never divulge that.

"Thank you Anko-san, but I think I'm fine where I am at."

She shrugged. "Suit yourself, you'd like it better I bet. Plus you could stare up at the sky if you set yourself at a good angle. It makes you feel really small, insignificant. It's a neat experience." Anko liked to keep herself grounded, liked to know her place in reality sometimes... even if she was a little weird.

"Oh. I'm aware," he mentioned. "Though with all of these city lights seeing the stars is a difficult thing."

She shrugged. "You can still make out a few. In any case, it's a nice sensation to be under an open sky that way."

"Usually I can see them quite well when I'm in New Zealand," he mused looking up. "I haven't been there in awhile though."

Anko laughed. "Stop rubbing that stuff in my face or I'm going to hound you to tag along everywhere." If Urahara wasn't careful he'd have her bugging him every chance she got.

"I'm most likely going to Okinawa not long after we get back from this trip," he replied. "Mostly to treat Rukia-chan to a trip sense she couldn't make this one." Urahara ran his fingers through his hair. "Well, I don't think it would be a smart thing for you to follow me everywhere I go."

She raised a brow and looked at him genuinely curious as to what he meant. "Why not," she finally said, nosing around again. It likely wasn't the best course of action but those kinds of social delicacies were often lost on her.

"Because for the most part, my traveling isn't done for pleasure, my dear." The scotch in his system was making him a little loose with his lips.

"But you see so many wonderful places. Aren't you enjoying this trip," she asked, hoping he was and resolving to fix things if he was at all displeased. "Even if you do travel for business, you're bound to have some fun!"

"It isn't business either," he responded again. Women with a nosy nature was going to be the death of him one day. "It's for the fact if I don't go somewhere that I'm not, I could end up killed. " He chuckled slightly.

Well, this was a strange revelation. She canted her head to one side in confusion. "Killed? I'm afraid you've lost me Urahara-san."

Kisuke bit the inside of his cheek. "Ah, I think I'll go do that sleep thing you suggested to me, Anko-san." He stood up and staggered a bit. There was a chair in his room after all.

She blinked, having been blown off, but still extremely intrigued. No matter, she'd find out eventually. She now had a goal. "Eh... goodnight," she said, remaining in her place.

"Good night. Sleep well, you'll need the rest for the excitement for tomorrow." On that note he staggered back inside, closing the door behind him.

Ugh I feel like I was so way off during most of this. =_=
