New PoT ch1 summary/translation

[Reposted from here.]

Summary below! Needless to say, there are SPOILERS in this post and comments.

Our story begins in New York's Grand Central station with Ryoma chugging down a can of Dad's root beer while he's outside. (Not Ponta!) He says "It's finished." (The drink.)

Then we have a splash page (Prince of Tennis Dream Team development!)

The next few color pages have English words on them, so I assume everyone understands them, but in case you don't, Ryoma's train is about to leave. Ryoma serves a tennis ball, smacks the whistle out of the conductor's hands, and manages to make it into the train by using his racket to prop the doors open. Don't try this at home, kids. Everyone goes "whoooa" and "amazing" and "holy crap" (<-- I kid you not, this is in the page *laughing*) and Ryoma just goes, "Everyone's so noisy." Young black dude points out that Ryoma dropped an airmail letter (they made the edges blue and red just so you know--also a nod to Seigaku colors). Ryoma looks up at the sky and goes, "Japan..."

Then the color pages end, and we're back to regular black and white drawings. [ETA: Because I forgot--this takes place while the 3rd years are... well, still 3rd years. I assume post-Nationals but pre-graduation...]

The first page has "Gather 50 junior high students!?" The speaker is Kurobe, and he's driving that golf cart while chasing the actual Under-17 (henceforth U-17) reserves as they jog along. Kurobe continues with, "Training camp with the high school All-Japan reserves? Haha! What kind of variety show is this? This is where we develop the pinnacle of the Japanese tennis world, which means we groom excellence, Coach!" (I think he's talking to the head coach or something.) "Junior high kids wouldn't last three days here!"

We get a nice view of lots of said U-17 reserves jogging away. One of them says, "Hey, did you hear?" Another goes, "Heheh, well, since this is such a special occasion, we'll just have to take special care of them."
And then we come to the page with Seigaku, hooray. ^_^ Someone (Eiji?) says, "So this is the high school All-Japan reserves training camp grounds."

Taka-san goes, "Wow... er, it looks really amazing..." while sweatdropping. (Oh Taka. *pats him*) Oishi says, "Is it really all right? Calling junior high students like us here..."

Inui says, "0%" <-- if you needed this translation I can't help you anymore. "Up to last year, there are no precedents of calling junior high students up to this training camp. There are currently 270 to 280 players already in the All-Japan high school reserves. Adding another 50 junior high students to this mix... chance of trouble, 100%."

Eiji isn't listening--he's looking around, and spies the security camera. The next frame is Eiji, who's climbed up to the camera, clinging to it, flashing it a V sign. (*facepalms* This was when I decided poor Eiji is going to be so short-changed in the new PoT. Dude, whose idea was that stunt? T_T) Eiji goes, "Oishi, quick, look! It's a security camera!" Seigaku is understandably shocked (in the "Eiji, come down!" way...)

Everyone's still waiting for Kaidoh and Momo ("Looks like they aren't here yet." "Aa.")

"Oh no, it looks like they're here." In the distance we see two people. No prizes guessing who. They're talking smack to each other about how one's not allowed to get there before the other, and yeah, we've seen this posturing-that-won't-lead-to-a-fight many times before. "Wanna do something about it, buster?" "Anytime, moron!" Oishi has to come up and get them to stop ("Geez, you two, don't start this first thing in the morning!")

There's a dialogue bubble with no owner ("Speaking of that, did you two jog/cycle all the way?") And then Kintarou shows up. (Seigaku obligingly identifies them by saying, "Shitenhouji!") First thing Kintarou says is, "Hey, Echizen isn't here?" Oshitari Kenya basically says, "Oh, they called up all of you." Koharu says, "Hoho! They're the winning school! Meanwhile, our Zaizen and Yuuji~~" (Don't worry, Koharu. Kaidoh's there. ^_~) Shiraishi says, "I'd love to see that charismatic little brat again."

All is quiet on the Seigaku front. Shitenhouji walks past Seigaku, and Chitose says, "... however, their pillar's gone, so Seigaku's gonna be toast!" The Shitenhoujis cheerily head up the road "Bye guys, we're going ahead!" Behind Seigaku, a bus (very clearly-labelled "Hyoutei Gakuen") comes up, and someone shouts, "Seigaku, get out of the way!" As the bus barrels past, Seigaku obligingly identifies Hyoutei, for people who can't read English.

Meanwhile, reminiscent of Ginka, the U-17s are watching the arrival of Rikkai. One of the U-17s says, "There are quite a few junior high kids who're pretty big for their age." "Hey, look, that guy... is he really in junior high?" Whaddya know, it's Sanada. (No, dearie. Sanada's an old man. Kind of like Benjamin Button, come to think of it.)

Seigaku wanders by, and a U-17 says, "Those guys look pretty weak, don't they?" "That egghead looks pretty out of things!" (Oh, poor Oishi, you're so maligned.)

The U-17s smirk at each other and hop out of the trees. "HOLD IT, KIDDIES~!" (Gee, I've seen this before, didn't Arai do this WAAAAAY back when?) The U-17s go, "So, you kids are the ones with special permission to be here at this camp, huh?" Momo defers politely for the team. U-17s (Amagami Tenjin with the hat, Dairi Hirari with the short hair; both are from court 16--this will become clearer later) basically say, "Wanna pass? Hit this can. We'll let you have ten tries each. If you can't do that, you're going to be absolutely screwed at this camp, yo." "So hurry up, junior high kids!"

So. Momo hits. "Lucky, I got it!" Taka-san hits, too. Inui uses the Waterfall Serve, misses, but the can topples over from sheer air displacement. (*laugh*) Kaidoh's Snake needs a few goes, but he gets pretty close. Oishi's Moon Volley is still as pinpoint precise as ever. Eiji jumps up, catches the bouncing-away can between his feet, and goes, "Oishi, you're so great!" (I can hear the "kira" sparkle already.) Fuji uses Hakugei to get the cans, and then says, "Tezuka, I think you only need one ball to do this."

Apparently Tezuka is special. There are three cans for him. (That, or there were three cans for everyone else, and it was completely unclear from the manga, because the only time I saw three cans was with Tezuka.) Tezuka serves, and whaddya know, he hits one can, which ricochets and takes out the other two. Momo is amazed. "That's... That's Tezuka-buchou for you. One tennis ball hit three cans."

So they pass (duh). U-17s say, "Don't get too cocky, junior high kids! You're in the cage now. Or maybe we should say, amongst the beasts!!"

Seigaku is duly impressed by the technological training aids. "Wow, that's amazing!" "There's this cutting-edge feeling." One of the U-17s in court 13 (Honda? I can't pronounce the kanji) Todoroki says, "I pity those junior high kids, they're going to feel frustration at such a young age." The Kite-lookalike, Murata, says, "Do you really have time for other people right now?" (Presumably they're in the middle of some really tough training right now.)

Too late--both of them are spotted/overheard. "Court 13! NO TALKING! Honda Todoroki and Murata, you're demoted to court 14!" I feel bad for Murata, but anyway.

And then we see Kurobe Yukio, the model U-17 representatives' strategy coach. "This time... while the 20-player first string is in Korea, we've chosen 50 junior high students to join the 246 second-stringers on a training camp. While the high-schoolers among you may feel unhappy about this, I hear the standard of junior high tennis has gotten pretty high these days-- EVERYONE! LEARN FROM EACH OTHER! RAISE THE OVERALL JAPAN UNDER-17 STANDARD!"

Tennis balls rain from the sky.

"There are 250 balls. The 46 of you without balls (haha) can go home now!"

Hands reach for the tennis balls. "Whoa, he's serious? Dude, this is a joke, isn't it?" "Balls! Get the balls!"

The junior high kids get their back by monopolizing the balls, of course. Inui points over to where one ball's bounced away into a corner, and the U-17s go after it, but oh, too late--Ryoma's got it. "Hi everyone!"

And that's the new PoT, chapter 1.

ETA: reposoir brought up a great point--wonder if this does anything to those flashforwards at the end of the last manga? [ETA3: ashkahchan says here that the flashforwards could have happened anywhere between June (end of Tennis season) and March (graduation). Hope this solves the question!]

ETA2: hinoai weighed in with some comments here about Saint Rudolph, for those of you looking for SeiRu members. She also confirms the time frame is fall, 3rd year. Thanks for the name-correction, too!
