It can create a distance. Coming up with a nickname for a person also can create that distance and reinforce it.

We all know that I have a few nicknames for certain exes LOL.

When was the last time you heard me speak of certian people by name? But if he's married to her and doesn't use her name, how does he get her attention? And why the hell aren't they working on this, communicating about this or something?

NOT married to her anymore. Should have said "his former marriage". Oops.
