I watched Mysterious Skin in the throes of sickness over Christmas weekend and I was not impressed. I guess my expectations ruined it, but I adore Greg Araki and everything he has done to date. I suppose the movie would have sated me had I watched it without knowing of Araki’s involvement, but it left me wondering when he decided that mainstream ( Read more... )

Mysterious Skin made me really upset in an emotional way that very few movies are able to touch. I went through a similar lifestyle about 6 years ago, only not as horrible. That scene with the cereal was quite surreal and disturbing.

Of course it was nothing in comparison to Nowhere, but I don't think that it was a horrible film. Just very different from the rest of his material.

I didn't think it was bad at all. I think I just expected something darker. But then, I've never touched that life, so I would imagine it's easier for me to watch without too much involvement.

I thought it was dark in a "reality way" as opposed to an "artistic way," which I think was his intention. To do something different.

I see that, about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's portion of the story, anyway. But Brady Corbet, on his own, was just not compelling or real to me at all.
