[series]: Anne of Green Gables
[character]: Anne Shirley
[character history / background]: Anne is the daughter of Walter & Bertha Shirley, two school teachers in Nova Scotia who died when she was just an infant. She spent her first eleven years bouncing from orphanage to foster home and back again. Some places were almost kind, other places were downright cruel, but no place was home.
By either accident or act of God, Anne was sent to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert instead of the boy they had requested. Marilla was going to send her back, but Anne's winsome ways quickly charmed Matthew, and once she saw how miserable Anne's life as an orphan was, Marilla could not bear to send her back to it. The new little family went through a great number of trials and tribulations, but Anne quickly became the center of the Cuthberts' world, and a well-beloved figure in the little town of Avonlea.

[character abilities]: As Marilla puts it, "She could talk the hind leg off a mule." She has a vivid imagination and is a talented writer...once she gets over her passion for big words. She's also very good at dealing with children, especially twins.
[character personality]: Anne has a very tempestuous spirit. She can be bright and sparkling, the most cheerful, energetic person you have ever met. And she can be the most gloomy, depressed person you will ever see. And if angry, she is quite capable of breaking a slate over your head. Once offended, she does not easily forgive, and she is EXTREMELY competitive. There is no comfortable middle with her -- every emotion is felt with passionate intensity.
On a whole, though, she is a cheerful, curious, optimistic, and loving person, despite her unhappy childhood. Her imagination and love of reading have kept her company and given her solace over the years, although many adults worry about how she seems to live in her own little world. She has a tendency to exaggerate, but she never outright lies unless forced to.
Although she's a dreamer, Anne is not a loner by any stretch of the imagination -- even her own. She loves people and being around them, and if given the opportunity she will talk non-stop to anyone. She can also be a good listener, but very few people have as many thoughts (profound or inane) as she does. She dreams of having a "bosom friend."
But more than anything, Anne dreams of having a family and a home. She is a girl starved for love, and she has plenty of love to give, if only anyone would accept it.
