Last chapter recap - Candy confessed to her crush on Ennis, Scott and Ella think Ennis misses Jack, and Jack decides to move on with his life as Avery offers him a full-time job. Jack accepts. He just needs to tell the Del Mars...
On with the story!
****
Jack closed Mitchell’s door, inhaled and exhaled slowly. Well, that had gone better than we could’ve hoped. He had taken a couple of hours off to visit DMC and tell Mitchell and Ennis about the job offer from Avery, and his decision to accept it. He’d discussed the details with Avery that morning and had stressed again that he didn’t mind speaking to Mitchell and Ennis himself, but Avery insisted on talking to Mitchell at least. Jack had to admit that it had made things a bit easier, but he still felt guilty. Mitchell didn’t seem at all put out that Jack had decided to move to Avery Brice; it was almost like he expected it.
Telling Ennis would be a different matter, though.
Jack made the short walk down the hall and knocked on Ennis’ door, feeling slightly breathless.
“Yup,” Ennis called.
Jack pushed open the door and smiled nervously. “Hi. Can I see you for a moment?”
Ennis was typing something on his computer, but sat back in his chair as soon he saw Jack, his face a mixture of surprise and relief. “Jack,” he said, “of course. Come in.” He stood quickly and moved around to the front of the desk to pull out a chair. “Sit down.”
Jack hovered anxiously. He knew he’d fidget like a child if he sat in the chair. “I’d rather stand, if that’s ok.”
Ennis raised an eyebrow and rested a hip on the desk. “Ok. How are you? What can I do for you?”
Jack sucked in a deep breath and shoved his hands into the back pockets of his jeans. It was time. “I’ve come to give my two weeks’ notice.”
Ennis blinked for a second and something dark flashed in his eyes. “Oh. Ok. Can I ask why?”
Jack hoped he could phrase it correctly and looked down as he shuffled his feet. “It’s not that I don’t like working here; quite the opposite. Everyone’s been great. It’s just that I’ve been offered a permanent position at Avery Brice. It’s the kind of job that doesn’t come along every day and I’d be a fool not to take it. It’s my dream. I have to take it.”
“I can understand that,” Ennis nodded and folded his arms across his chest. “It doesn’t surprise me at all. I think you’ll do well there.”
“Thanks.” Jack relaxed a little. “I hope so.”
Ennis flashed a quick smile.
At that moment Mitchell knocked briefly on Ennis’ door and entered. Jack swung around to look at him. Mitchell caught his eye and nodded. “I assume you’ve told Ennis?”
“Yeah,” Jack said.
Mitchell extended his hand to Jack. Jack took it and Mitchell shook it warmly. “Well, best of luck, Jack. We’ll sure miss you around here, won’t we, Ennis?”
Ennis bit his lower lip. “We sure will.” He also held out his hand to Jack and Jack took it quickly. Ennis’ palm was warm and dry against his, and fit perfectly into his own.
They shook hands silently, eyes locked. Jack had to wonder if this was it, and also at the what ifs? What if he had met Ennis at a different time, in a different place? What if he were a bit older, more in Ennis’ league? What if he had ever actually had the nerve to voice his attraction, act on it? Would he have stood a chance with this man? Had Ennis really missed him like Scott had thought? Aware that he was still holding Ennis’ hand, Jack dropped it swiftly and stuck his hand back in his pocket. “Thank you. Both of you. For everything you’ve done for me while I’ve been here.”
“Our pleasure,” Mitchell replied with a grin. “It’s been great having you.”
Ennis cleared his throat and ran his fingers through his short hair. “Yeah, and if there’s anything we can do, please, don’t hesitate to ask. Anything.”
Mitchell shot an amused glance at Ennis. “Absolutely, Jack. Anything.”
“Thanks,” Jack said. “I really appreciate it.” He looked at Ennis and Mitchell sadly; he knew he’d miss working here for more than the obvious reasons. The Del Mars were great people, but they were also a professional team to be reckoned with. Jack would miss them both. A lot. “Well, I’d better get back over there. Still got work to do,” he flashed a quick grin, “can’t let the boss down.”
Ennis smiled sadly and shook his head, “Nope. Definitely not.”

The days flew by after that. Without the weight of his future bearing down on his shoulders, Jack was able to throw himself into his work at Avery Brice. He arrived at the office early and stayed late. No one had a bad word to say about him and Avery was constantly praising his work. Jack couldn’t be happier-in the professional sense, that was.
The only negative was his love life. Since the move from DMC, Jack hadn’t been with anyone; he hadn’t even been out looking for anyone. He worked, ate and slept. He didn’t have the energy or desire to do anything else. It was almost like that side of him had shut down and become dormant. Jack had to laugh at himself. Celibate at twenty-three? He should be in the prime of his sexual life and humping anything that moved. He still had the dreams, though, and would frequently wake tangled up in damp sheets. He knew it was all about Ennis and he really should get over it and move on, but Jack didn’t want to. He couldn’t. Not yet, anyway.
A couple of weeks later, fate would throw him a helping hand.

Jack never thought he’d be here in the offices of DMC again. He cursed Scott for making him stop by to fetch his damn suit jacket. Scott was out of town with Ella and needed it for an off-site meeting tomorrow. Why the idiot didn’t have a spare was beyond him.
It was late when Jack arrived and he was lucky that the security guy had recognized him. He still had to leave all his bags down at the front desk, though, and practically sign his life away to get upstairs. He had a strange sense of déjà vu as he rode up in the elevator and the door pinged open opposite Candy’s dark and empty desk. The whole place was kind of spooky and eerily quiet after hours.
The only light he could see was a dim glow from the direction of the partners’ offices. Ennis’s office. He sucked in a nervous breath and walked quickly towards the office where he and Scott had worked together.
Jack caught a glimpse of Ennis as he walked past. He told himself he wouldn’t, but he couldn’t resist a quick peek. Ennis was sitting behind his desk, leaning over some papers, elbows on the table and hands linked around the back of his head. Jack’s eyes lingered on the curve of Ennis’ neck and shoulders before he hurried past. He thought he’d gotten away unseen until he heard the sharp noise of a chair being shoved back.
“Jack?”
He jumped to a halt at the urgent tone in Ennis’ voice. He retraced his steps and peeked around the door again. “Oh…hi.”
“Come in.” Ennis waved him forward and Jack stepped into the office hesitantly. He wasn’t sure if he was about to get busted for being in the building when he no longer worked there. “Shut the door,” Ennis said.
Jack obeyed and closed the door gently, leaning back against the solid wood.
“How are you?” Ennis moved towards him, hands in his pockets.
“Good. Thanks.” Jack shrugged.
“What are you doing here?”
“Oh, just got to pick something up for Scott. I signed in with security and everything.”
Ennis’ eyes roamed his face. “Avery tells me you’re doing well?”
Jack smiled and relaxed a little. Work talk he could do. “Yeah, I love it there. He’s a great guy to work for. He has, like, so many ideas I’m amazed his head doesn’t explode. He’s such an inspiration to be around.”
Ennis nodded in agreement. “I thought it would suit you there.”
“Not that I didn’t like working here, of course,” Jack added.
“I know.” Ennis shifted a little closer.
Jack felt himself start to flush at Ennis’ nearness. Old habits clearly died hard. He cleared his throat nervously. “How…how is everything here?”
“Good.” Ennis took one hand out of his pocket and ran his fingers through his hair. “Busy, but we’re always busy.”
“Yeah. That’s good, though, right?”
Ennis just watched him with dark eyes and Jack felt himself start to squirm. Damn the man. Why did he always have this effect on him? Couldn’t he give a guy a break? Jack’s heart was racing and he wanting nothing more than to get the hell out of there-or to launch himself at Ennis like a lovesick fool.
“So… Saturday Bridge is looking good?”
Ennis’ eyes dropped to Jack’s lips, then moved away so quickly Jack thought he had imagined it.
Ennis smiled briefly. “It is. Want to see?”
“Really? I mean, yeah, sure. But aren’t you working?” Jack looked over at the mountain of papers on Ennis’ desk.
Ennis followed Jack gaze and grimaced. “Yes, but a man deserves a break every so often,” he glanced back at Jack with another small smile, “don’t you think?”
Jack nodded, eyes wide.
Ennis brushed past Jack to open the office door. Jack moved back with a shudder as their arms touched briefly. He gave himself a mental shake. Get a grip, Jack.
He followed Ennis down the corridor and got another weird sense of déjà vu as Ennis unlocked one of the boardrooms-just as he had done all those months ago. Once again, the view of the city through the floor to ceiling windows took Jack’s breath away. The sky was inky black and shimmering lights were on in the surrounding office buildings, making the whole scene sparkle and flicker.
“Here.” Ennis’ voice drew Jack away from the window and to the shadowy ante-room, where once again stood a model of an apartment complex. Only this time, it was Saturday Bridge. Something that Jack and Ennis had designed together.
Jack bent over it in awe, admiring the curves of the glass and the detail in the tiny stone bricks. “Gorgeous,” he murmured.
“I think so,” Ennis replied in a low voice.
Jack heard the unmistakable click of the heavy wooden door being closed. He froze as he felt Ennis come up behind him, leaning forward over Jack’s shoulder to gently touch a penthouse balcony. “This is my favorite part, right here. Can you imagine the views? You could stand out there and see forever.”
“I guess, technically, you could,” Jack replied, repeating Ennis’ words back at him from the day they visited the site.
Ennis huffed out a laugh. “Yeah.”
Jack sucked in a shaky breath, conscious that his palms were starting to sweat. He rubbed them on his jeans and stood up quickly, bumping into Ennis’ chest as he did so. Ennis reached out to steady him, holding onto Jack’s shoulders. Jack turned his head and saw heat flare in Ennis’ eyes. Jack didn’t move, couldn’t move. He was so close he could feel Ennis’ breath on his cheek. He closed his eyes to savor the moment, then swallowed down his disappointment as Ennis dropped his hands and stepped away.
Jack turned around and opened his eyes to find Ennis staring at him, breathing hard. Jack suddenly couldn’t take it anymore-he had to touch, had to know. He raised his hand and gently ran his fingers across Ennis’ roughened jaw. Ennis closed his eyes and pressed his own hand on top of Jack’s, stilling the movement. Jack’s control snapped and he grabbed Ennis’ head with his other hand and pulled him into a hot, hard kiss, shivering as their lips finally met.
It took Ennis about half a second to respond. He made a desperate noise deep in his throat and yanked Jack tight against him, swinging him around to pin him against the wall.
Jack was in heaven. He couldn’t believe this was happening. Finally. Ennis’ mouth was hot and hungry and Jack felt like he was being devoured. He had never been kissed like this in his life, ever. Desire poured through him. Ennis bit Jack’s lower lip and thrust his tongue deep into Jack’s mouth, tasting, kissing him passionately. Jack’s knees trembled and he’d never been so grateful for a wall in his life. He knew he would have melted into a puddle on the floor otherwise. He kissed Ennis back with equal fervor-he’d wanted this for so long, too long, and never thought he would have it. God, how he wanted this man. He couldn’t remember ever wanting anyone so much before.
Ennis wrenched his mouth away, eyes blazing. “You’re not seeing anyone, are you? That blond guy? In the bar?” he rasped, lips brushing Jack’s cheek.
“Who? What?” Jack’s brow furrowed in confusion. “No… no one.”
“Thank fuck for that.” Ennis’ head swooped down and he fastened his lips onto Jack’s neck, sucking almost painfully.
It was the first time he’d ever heard Ennis curse, but it didn’t even register. Jack closed his eyes in pleasure; he knew he’d have a bruise there in the morning, but he didn’t care. He just wanted this. He wanted everything. His hands slid down Ennis’ chest and pulled his shirt free so he could grasp at the warm skin of Ennis’ torso. Once he touched bare flesh, he heard Ennis growl and pull back slightly. The next thing Jack knew was that his t-shirt was being yanked over his head and Ennis’ mouth was on his chest, his fingers running feverishly over Jack’s stomach, down to the waist of his jeans.
Jack panted like he was in heat; he was so damn turned on he was this close to exploding. As he felt the hard evidence of Ennis’ arousal brush against his leg, his own legs finally gave up and Jack slid to the floor.
Ennis followed him down, tearing off his own shirt so their bare chests rubbed together deliciously. Jack collapsed back on the carpet and pulled Ennis down on top of him, winding his legs around Ennis’ thighs, kissing him desperately. Ennis’ hands were all over him, his chest, his shoulders, his stomach. It was like he couldn’t get enough of Jack’s skin.
“Fuck, I want you.” Ennis huffed into Jack’s neck, his hips starting to grind and pump.
Jack couldn’t say anything, his brain and mouth no longer connected. With a sudden lunge he rolled over so he was on top of Ennis, straddling his hips, watching Ennis’ chest heave up and down, fire glittering in his dark brown eyes. His hands scrabbled at Ennis’ belt, wanting, needing to see more. Ennis attacked Jack’s belt as they kept their eyes locked on each other. Kicking jeans and slacks free, Jack moaned as he felt the damp, bare heat of Ennis’ flesh against his own. They rocked together, naked bodies writhing on the floor. Pent up desire pouring out of them after being bottled up for so long. Ennis pushed up again and swung Jack back underneath him, pinning him down with his lower body. Jack locked his legs around Ennis’ naked waist and this time he didn’t stop Ennis as his hips started to pump. Jack dug his hands into Ennis’ hair and pulled him down into another impossibly hot kiss, tongues sliding together, mimicking their cocks as they rubbed together, humping on the floor, carpet burns be damned. Jack knew he had reached the point of no return as the white heat built in his groin unbearably. He couldn’t hold it in any longer. He grasped Ennis to him tightly as his whole body shuddered and wetness pulsed between them. “Ennis…”
Ennis’ hips snapped uncontrollably as he felt Jack come. With a rough gasp of breath he erupted onto Jack’s stomach. “Jack…”
