Jack finally learns Ennis' name...
As I shake Ennis’ hand he smiles back at me. Damn, but he’s got the cutest dimples.
“You live close, Ennis?” I ask, reluctantly pulling my hand away and shoving it in my pocket to hold onto his warmth for a little longer.
“Yeah.” He nods. “I live the other side of the lake.” He gestures across at the large shimmering lake that lies to the west of the playground.
I note that he says ‘I’ not ‘we’. Interesting.
“Bobby and I live in town,” I offer in return. “Well, actually he only lives with me for half of the week - Fridays and weekends.”
He sighs and turns to watch his girls. “That’s half a week more than I get,” he says quietly.
“Oh.” I don’t quite know what to say.
“Divorced.” Ennis says. “She got custody.” He scuffs his feet against the bottom of the bench.
It’s funny how three words can say so much. “I’m sorry,” I reply. “Must be hard.”
“Yeah.” He picks up the coffee I got for him and takes a long swallow. “How about you?”
I shake my head, “we never married.”
I thank the heavens every day that we came to our senses before treading that path. Bobby was never actually planned, but it was the happiest mistake I ever made. Just goes to show that even one venture over to the heterosexual side of the fence can produce unexpected results.
He nods and drinks more coffee. “Wise move.”
I mirror his moves and finish off my own coffee.
We stand silently for a while and watch the kids play. I can feel the heat radiating off him. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but this guy has me hooked. I can feel the attraction curling in my gut. I watch him watching the sandbox. I shift a little closer so our shoulders brush against each other, just to see if he moves away.
He doesn’t.
“What… what are you doing for lunch?” I ask quickly, before I lose my nerve.
He turns and pins me with those luscious brown eyes. “No plans. Why?”
I point behind us to the red roofed building across the road. “I was planning to take Bobby to McDonalds in a while. Like to join us?” My boy is a sucker for those chicken nuggets.
His eyes sweep over my face then return to his girls. “Yeah, I guess we could do that.”

Note - so I actually visited the playground over the weekend and snapped a couple of pictures. If you'd like to see them they are here:
