“He was lovely, wasn’t he?” my mom said as we sat down with two peppermint Mochas. Her treat. I was buying her a phone after all.

“Who?” I said vaguely.

She gave me a knowing look. “Don’t play innocent with me. The phone boy. Ennis.”

“Maybe.”

“You liked him, Jack. I would too if I were twenty years younger.”

“Mom!” I waved my hand up and down in our unspoken language for ‘turn the volume down’. My mom only operates on two levels - loud and off.

She obediently tried to lower her voice and leaned in closer to me. “You did though, didn’t you? He got you all hot under the collar.”

Oh boy, what did I do in a previous life to deserve this? I sighed and took a sip of my minty chocolaty goodness. I may as well confess. She wasn’t going to let it lie until I did. “Yeah, I liked him. He was cute. Ok, so he may have made my hormones go a little crazy. Doesn’t mean anything.”

She smiled in happiness, “but of course it does, honey! You haven’t been the same since you split up with what’s his name-”

“-Wyatt-”

“¬-yes, him. It’s the first time I’ve seen a spark in your eyes for months.”

True. Wyatt had hurt me pretty bad. Didn’t mean that I wanted anything else - or anybody else - right now. I was happy just being me on my own.

“He liked you too.”

I almost dropped my coffee and my eyes snapped up to meet hers. “What?”

She nodded and tapped her nose. “A mother knows these things.”

I was almost dreading going back into the shop to pick up the phone. I eyed her warily. “You’re not going to say anything to him, are you?”

She smiled, “I just want to see you happy, Jack.”

I thought I had gotten away with it. I handed over my credit card and signed the slip without a comment. I had even managed to avoid looking at Ennis directly as he packaged everything up.

I should have known better.

“Thank you, Ennis.” My mom said brightly. “It’s been our pleasure.”

I saw Ennis nod out of the corner of my eye. He pulled a business card from his top pocket and slid it across the counter. “Do call me, please, if you have any trouble or any questions.”

My mom picked up the card and handed it to me. “I think you’ll be wanting this, won’t you?”

I did, but I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction. I blindly pushed the card into the back pocket of my jeans. I did look up at Ennis then and caught him watching me, an expectant look on his face. “Thanks,” I said, as casually as possible, trying to ignore the way my heart was attempting to leap out of my throat.

“You’re welcome,” Ennis replied.

Damn, but that sexy drawl curled through my body. I feel my face begin to flush again. I hung my head forward so that my dark hair covered my reddening cheeks.

“Hormones,” my mom said, actually managing to lower her voice as she leaned towards Ennis.

Ennis blinked. “I’m sorry.”

“Hormones. Unpredictable, aren’t they?”

“I… er… I guess?” Ennis clearly didn’t know what to say.

“Mom!” I almost growled at her. “It’s time we left.”

But she wasn’t having any of it. She patted my arm in a soothing gesture. “Jack says you’ve had an effect on his. In a good way.”

Oh no she didn’t.

I groaned in embarrassment and resisted the urge to hide my face in my hands. I didn’t want to look at Ennis, but I had to do something. “Please, just ignore her, I’m so sorry. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Ennis cleared his throat and I braved a look at him. He was staring at me and his cheeks had flushed a most becoming rosy pink. He rubbed his hand nervously over his chest, sliding it between two shirt buttons in an unconscious gesture. “I… I did?”

“Did what?” I couldn’t take my eyes off the hand caressing his chest under that god awful shirt.

“Oh... nothing.” Ennis withdrew his hand and stepped backwards.

Fuck. Oh! Hormones. Of course. “Well, maybe,” I admitted. “Maybe a little.”

Ennis looked at me again and I swear I saw a gleam in his eye. I also swear that his lips curled up a little at the corners.

He was so cute it was almost painful. I bet he had a whole string of girls - and guys - crazy about him. I wanted to say more, but it wasn’t the time or place. He also remained silent, so I pushed my hair back off my face and picked up the bag with my mom’s phone in it. “Yeah, well I guess we should be going.”

Ennis’ eyes flicked towards the door and nodded. “Guess so. It was… nice to meet you, Jack.”

“You too.” I held out my hand and Ennis quickly grasped it. “Thanks for your help, Ennis.”

“Anytime.”

I moved aside to let my mom say her goodbyes, but she didn’t appear. I turned around to see that I was alone at the counter with Ennis. She had left me there.

Goddamn it.

I shook my head and couldn’t help but smile. I knew I’d find an excuse to come back.
