Trips to Afica animas1 January 5 2009, 03:27:49 UTC
Saw your comment with the "Ennis's 30th" story about wanting to go to Africa. There's a great group Overseas Adventure Travel out of Cambridge, Ma that runs the BEST and cheapest camping trips through the Serengeti to Tanzania and Kenya.Just bring your sleeping bag and clothes. Maximizes the time with the animals... all day long... not just morning and afternoon game drives. I've been to East Afica over twenty times camping in the bush and photographing the animals and I learned how to do it from OAT during two trips with them. If you can't find their (800) number look in the advertisements at the back of Outside Magazine. Believe me, if you go, once is NOT enough. The best time is January when the wildebeast migration arrives at Ndutu in the Southern Serengeti (Tanzania) or in June when they return to the Maasai Mara in the Northern Serengeti (Kenya) Living/working in New York City, I used to go twice a year January and June for over ten years before summers found me in the High Arctic photographing polar bears, caribou and arctic ( ... )

Thank you so much for the info. You seem to have had so great adventures yourself. Your loving description of all that you've seen in Africa makes me want to go even more. I must say that you have even peaked my curiousity about Montana. Hopefully I will eventually make it to Africa (and maybe even the plains of Montana). Thank you again for all of the info and here's hoping that 2009 is a great year for you.

Anna,
Thank you for your generous appreciation. My name is Toni Rapone and my e-mail is ajrapone@msn.com. Save it for future reference if you think I can be of any help to you. I live in Clyde Park between Bozeman and Livingston about an hour's drive north of Yellowstone from the Gardner, MT gate not the horrid West Yellowstone one, snowmobile capital of the world. The north gate road is open all winter and winds through the Lamar Valley where the herds of Bison gather especially in winter when they come down from the high country. This was also the primary release site for the wolves in '96 and the resident pack is about 38 animals. Also prime grizzly and black bear denning sites, so Spring brings out the females with cubs, say around early May. Interested yet? Well maybe the pronghorn antelope will tempt you when they drop their twin fawns giving a whole new meaning to 'hitting the ground running'!

Anyway, as a fellow Brokeback-inspired woman, I would be glad to help in anyway you think I can.

Thanks Toni. If I ever make my way there, I'll let you know. It sounds like a beautiful place and I most definitely would love to see all that you've described.
