A disappointment to us all

For those of us who have caught anything of celebrity big brother will surely all have thought the same thing: what the hell is Germaine Greer doing there? For a woman who once claimed that watching reality TV was "as dignified as looking through the keyhole in your teenage child's bedroom door" it was a surprise to see her trundle into the BB ( Read more... )

It is utterly baffling as to why she chose to go on BB in the first place. Controversial? No. Liberating? No. We can only hope that she was unaware of what a terrible decision she had made due to her either having never viewed the programme, or believing she could change it. Pity...

Greer’s stated aim on entering the ‘house’ was to raise money for her beloved section of Australian rainforest. While I do not doubt her passion or that (in her own words) she would do “anything” to raise the money, surely appearing on CBB would come somewhere down the list of money raising ventures after a lecture tour, writing a book, some after dinner speaking engagements, some appearances on Question Time and Newsnight Late Review and a bring and buy sale. Clearly part of her motivation was publicity, and in that at least she has been successful. In her exit interview with Davina she was quite candid and non-judgemental about other contestants’ real motives. Bez was broke. Kenzi is trying to raise the profile of his band. It is disappointing though to discover that Germaine’s motivation is just the same as all BB contestants, celebrities or otherwise - 15 minutes of fame (or I guess in the case of the celebs - another 15 minutes of fame ( ... )
