Idle words

It's sunday afternoon. My partner has buggered off into town to buy me a birthday present (cutting it a bit fine I'd say but we'll see) and I'm sitting in my living room pretending that the flat is not desperately untidy and in need of cleaning. So what do I do? Well as you can tell, I did not rush to the cupboard to reach for the vacuum cleaner, ( Read more... )

I've never thought of the web as publishing. I know that's what they call it. But for research it is marvellous. I've been praised for my research for 'Empyreal', but it has taken less time that writing the poem. I did read a little, but the speed at which relevant material could be got from Google (and one much appreciated source that I met personally on the web) is just amazing. By and large if you want to know it, it's probably Googlable. ;)

Yep Google should run the world (oh it does anyway).

Can you honestly say that you've never thought of the web as 'publishing'? If so, why not just write journal entries on your own word processor rather than LJ?!

I think of publishing as involving money and contracts and selling things to people I don't know. I use the web to talk to friends, and though I include things I'd like to publish according to the other definition, that's because I want to try them out on my friends first.

Maybe I see a distinction because I'm ancient. But it seems a natural one to me. Most of what people put on the web would never, ever be a candidate for the other sort of publication by its nature, rather than because of quality. If it were quality that were in question I'd call it publishing, but I don't think many people on LJ are writing something that they would want to try to sell or distribute on other media.

No, I've never thought of this as publishing, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it starting to appear in dictionaries as such, because the use of words changes, and the only definition of a word is how people use it. I don't mind anybody else using the word that way. I just can't see how I'd ever manage to do so myself!
