being 30

Mar 24, 2005 13:10

A week ago I turned 30. I had a great time celebrating the first major milestone of my life (18 = freedom but you’re too young to think of it in terms of milestones) and I was neither looking forward to it nor approaching it with fear. I have never been worried about getting older; this is partly because I have always looked at least 5 years ( Read more... )

Age had never bothered me by itself, I'll be 32 this October and I don't especially care how other people expect me to act, I'm going to act like me. There's a Friends quote that's quite funny but completely at odds with my own thoughts ( ... )

Can you compromise about moving by living somewhere that has easier access to Jersey? or is not a no-starter?

The kids thing really hits you in your 30s especially if you think that an early menopause is an issue. I don't think that many people are ever truly 'ready' for kids - if you are semi-ready you may as well go for it I think.

And yes you're right about acting the way you want to, and I do and always will. It's about not letting your percieved idea about other people's expectations get to you I guess.

Tobes wants to be back on the island, so no, not really any room for compromise. I can see where he's coming from, but I just don't want to be over there permanently/long term. And he has said that if he has kids then he wants that to happen in Jersey, too.

It's a shame that a good relationship sometimes has to break-up over these things. If he is determined to go, then you have to weigh up what's most important in your life. If it's the 2 of you together, I'd say go and deal with the resentments of leaving your life behind you as and when they appear.

Ok, nearly no-one. You look young for your age too though.

23 here

Hmm, I never really paid attention to age much... But some of my friends count there years by the day. It's all about how you feel I guess *shrugs*

You're 23...you have your whole life ahead of you............

No, don't get me wrong I am happy and where I want to be. This sense of unease is vaguely disarming though.

I hear people say that all the time "You have your whole life ahead of you" but doesn't everyone in some sense. I mean I've seen so many people work hard and not make it to where they want to be until they were in there prime. I'm just randomly babbling about this I guess, life is so tricky attimes I guess.

I understand your point of view. By the way my name is Rob, nice to meet you.

(and thanks for replying to such a random comment).

Hi Rob,
I've friended you. How did you stumble acroess my dull meanderings?

I meant that comment about 'having your whole life ahead of you' ironically. I was parodying an old person by saying it...

Life's always hard but also great - that applies to any age.

I'm 34, for what it's worth. I have no problem with that.

Though on occasion I do wonder if young people look at me and think of me as old, which bothers me. In my head I'm about 23.

ish.

That's one of my fears - looking and seeming old to young people. Not that I think it will happen for a while yet (I hope)!

It's when you're having a conversation with someone and you suddenly realise that they think you're old...

the grey hairs don't help, in my case...

Ah. Women don't have grey hairs until they're at least at retirement age you know :)

I’m entering the door through which I will always feel young but I won’t always look it.

Very well put. I did a test about my inner age a while ago, and got 24, which is where I felt my head stopped changing in terms of attitude to life. I'm 45. I don't know how to get old in the head. Or maybe I always was ;)
