origami convention vs. change ringing weekend
So, more information on my decision of where to go on my post-graduation travels...
If I were to go to the OrigamiUSA convention, I'd still want to go to ringing at Trinity on Wall Street,
which has 12 bells, but far fewer opportunities to practice ringing than does a ringing weekend. I'd get there either by carpooling with people, or by taking a greyhound ($25), then leave from NYC ($99, 3.5days on greyhound). I'd want to be in NYC Wednesday afternoon/evening through Monday dinner. The hostel is $150 for five nights. Registration for the conference is $192 (including three days without classes ($85) the conference booklet ($20), Monday dinner ($40), a t-shirt ($17), and $30 to renew my membership). So, total cost would be: $25 + $99 + $150 + $192 = $466, from Boston to Eugene via NYC. Extra costs would include: Metro fares, books, food.
If I were to go to the Toronto 12-bell weekend, I'd still want to get the origami "survival packet" for $55 (+ $30 membership renewal). I'd get there either by carpooling with people, or by taking a greyhound up ($50, 16h) then back to Eugene ($200, 3.5days). Dinners come to $60, and the hostel is $68 for three nights So total cost would be $55 + $50 + $200 + $60 + $68 = $413. I might be able to make Thursday ringing at Advent (in Boston) before I leave, depending what time I'd plan to arrive Friday. As above, extra costs would include: transportation, books, food.
Either way, I'd get back to Eugene about Thursday the 28th of June, hopefully in time for the English/Scottish Country Dancing lesson. Either way I'd pretty much go broke, based on my current savings (about $800, which I'm eating down lately for lots of dancing*). Speaking of which, I wonder when squares, tango and swing are, in Toronto (since I probably won't have time in NYC). Oh, and.. either way I'd bring Cally's handbells.
