Sync: Perspective/Theory of Flashforwards Taken In Fic

May 30, 2010 01:27

The Sync theory of Flashforwards is that what was originally seen was a timeline in which no flash had been seen. But now that it has been glimpsed, everyone is on a different & unseen timeline, even though people are working toward or away from what they saw, consciously or unconsciously. This allows that any given flash may ultimately play out with variations from slight to extreme or not at all.

For example, in Chapter 9 of Sync, Nicole has the feelings that she felt in her flash though she isn't clear on the reason or relevance related to the water. While Bryce, is back on the trail to find Keiko and may well rendezvous with her, but he hasn't the feelings he felt in his flash, only the memory of it. From the show, we know that Olivia/Lloyd though together were not quite emotionally & physically where they were in their flash at 10:00 as a result of choices they made (not that they might not have hit it by 10:30, LOL). It seems that whatever influence Charlie had on her this time that caused her to hold back and try to resist, originally was not part of the flash she saw. But that influence changed the way events played out just the same, even if just temporarily.

Dyson Frost posited that Big Events can change outcomes. This begs the question, what constitutes a "Big Event"? Is it only something on a grand scale like Al's suicide in an attempt to spare Celia's life? Or is it more intrinsically determined by each individual's perspective, choices & experiences leading up to any given end? Clearly to Olivia's mind, Charlie's feelings and state of mind were a Big Event and had an effect on how she chose to proceed. Sync follows this line of reasoning & applies to our main characters because it speaks deeply to the author's own penchant for logic, reason and storytelling discipline. ;)

By the rule of averages some of what people saw will happen exactly. Some by virtue of working toward them and the chain reactions that kicks off. Many or more will not because of individual or external chain reactions that offset them. It's clear some people lived who had no flash originally (Dem & possibly Celia is still holding on in ICU in a medically induced coma) & others who had flashes did indeed die before Zero Hour on April 29 (Somali dude, Al & do we really believe the entire Blue Team mowed down at FBI headquarters by Hellinger's men were all blankouts?). Given that, when Fate Date rolls around, everyone will wonder what that means (like the couple thousand who saw Somali Dude at that peace rally in their flashes, for a start). Could it be that maybe the lesson is that we all had what we had before the flashes, a chance, hope and choice, a finite number of choices given a situation maybe, but still choices & they are and always have been ours to make what we would with them. The future is unwritten in our consciousness. Flashforward or no, that is immutable when there are an infinite number of possibilities in the universe. That idea and hope with action is what shapes our choices and part of our destiny but it's not singularly independent. We are also bound by those actions of others that affect us exteriorly whether we know it or not & that part is the shape of Fate. Fate & Free Will altogether.

flashforward, theory
