B.J. Thomas "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
(Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)
GROUNDBREAKING. Seriously, this is one of the first instances, if not the first, of a modern musical interlude in a Hollywood film, and a period film, at that. And it's fucking wonderful.
04.
Peter Gabriel "In Your Eyes"
(Say Anthing)
Duh, scene in my icon, of course this was going to be on the list! (And I can't, for the life of me, find the actual scene on youtube - just a lot of parodies and copycats - but I'm pretty sure pretty much everyone knows this scene.) Arguably it's the image of John Cusack holding the boom box over his head and not actually the song that makes it so memorable, but just imagine if the song had been
this one, as it was originally. Yeah. So thank you, Peter Gabriel.

Elliott Smith "Needle In the Hay"
(The Royal Tenenbaums)
Once again, I don't even really know what to say. It's intense, and disturbing, and yet also beautiful in a really tragic sort of way because it's freaking Elliott Smith. It's just tonal perfection, and it makes the scene absolutely mesmerizing.

Aimee Mann "Wise Up"
(Magnolia)
I have since come to regard this movie as boring, pretentious, and melodramatic, but I fucking love Aimee Mann, and I still think this scene is actually brilliant. And when the kid sings his part at the end it feels like my heart is being punched down into my stomach. (Also, Skins totally ripped this scene off.)

Elton John "Tiny Dancer"
(Almost Famous)
I've only fairly recently come to realize how perfect this movie actually is. And this is definitely one of the most significant moments in the whole story, the first time that the band is really fractured and William starts really missing home, but then this little singalong just kind of picks everybody up and brings them back together. It's wonderful.
