30 DAYS OF MERLIN | 03. FAVOURITE EPISODE (4.05 "His Father's Son")
I know this episode just aired, but, seriously, this season is so fucking good, I can't even. I was a mess during this episode; I think I cried nonstop for the whole first half hour. I adore this theme of Arthur figuring out how to be his own man apart from his (fucking) father and being strong enough to be the kind of king he really wants to be. But this episode isn't just a good showcase for Arthur himself, but really for a lot of the characters and relationships in the show, and I always love episodes like that. Merlin/Arthur gets a lot of good stuff here, and Arthur/Gwen, and even the knights have some really great moments.
And Morgana's part is actually just as fantastic as Arthur's. And the mirror of it: Arthur discovers that he isn't anything like his father, while Morgana discovers that she is. I love the idea that vengeance and bitterness have twisted her into becoming exactly what she hated. And it makes perfect sense to me that she would be this way now, after everything that happened in "The Coming of Arthur" (rather than before it, which will never make sense to me), because in her eyes, she's the one who has been betrayed. She's only thinking of herself now. It's tragically ironic, and I love it.
What a brilliant episode.
