It is almost 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 2, and I have finally given up completely on my optics take-home exam. I've been working on it for days (literally), and I really don't know what I'm doing. Somehow, I managed to write -something- down for every problem, and I think that something might have even been correct on one or two occasions... The ( Read more... )

I'm glad you enjoyed having us all back for a weekend (or a week in my case). It was really good to see you again, too. I'm gonna miss you here :-(

On a different note, I don't see why math is romanitic or sexy as you always tell me. But if you think about math studies and eventually come to the conclusion that you really wanna do that, I'm convinced that you're clever (and stubborn) enough to make it. Some wise (?) old man once said "you're a mathematician when you declare war on a homework problem". So if you wanna go into that fight, you better be prepared and know what to expect. Math can be a real bitch. But I know you can fight back.

I realize I have a biased perspective on this, but if you're into math and physics, but neither purely for its own sake, you might consider giving some thought to engineering. It's very math-intensive, with practical physical results. Engineers are also known to do some programming among other bitchin' stuff on computers.

But more importantly, glad to hear you're feeling better.

I was actually going to do exactly that. My plan was to go into materials science and engineering graduate school (or possibly polymer and/or chemical engineering), and now I'm just really lost.

MSE has a lot of chemistry, which is why I didn't have a lot of taste for it, but I hear that's a really friggin' lucrative field.

Yeah, it is quite fantastic, especially because if you have a degree in MSE, you are "qualified" to do almost anything as far as lot of people are concerned... particularly in industry, which I think is where I'd rather be... academia kinda sucks.
