HOLY MACKAREL, that's a craptacular article. Money doesn't buy happiness with the old and sick, it buys relief from pain and security. The flaw in linking those two is that personal wealth is not required for either one. The conflation with relief from pain and security with wealth is very American, what with American attitudes that everyone has to look out for themselves, but it is not true. I suspect if this study was done in a country with a properly functioning social security system where everyone was guaranteed a decent standard of living and unlimited medical care in their old age the results about the equation between money and happiness would be true regardless of age.
also, money can buy shelter, food, and attention.... all are REQUIRED in the long haul for happiness....
just because someone can have alot of money and be miserable doesnt mean money cant buy happyness, its just that sometimes the happiness is offset by stress...
to simplify, money is in the "good stuff" category, and stress is in the "bad stuff category" good stuff - bad stuff = happyness

Also, if anyone wants to fund my own research project, I'd be glad to test their hypothesis, flawed or no.
Not that I'm not happy right now...and I'm po' right now........ But I'd be glad to put on my best angsty face if somebody's buying. I'm not proud.
