Thunderbird is pretty good. That's what I use.

news.motzarella.org is a free news source and works pretty reliably.

On OS X, I use and strongly recommend MT-NewsWatcher. It and its predecessors have been the usenet newsreader of choice on Macs for 15 years. While it looks a bit dated as a Mac app, it does just about everything the most full-featured Unix newsreaders of yore do and more while being very easy to use. With a couple of tweaks to the default settings, you're all set to "space" through your entire set of newsgroups on multiple servers. It's also free.
