On the way to brunch, saw the second Baltimore Oriole I've ever seen; saw a garter snake by the log out back (maybe two snakes; after one darted into the log, Henry spotted its head inching back out, tongue a-fluttering, head a-swaying), ate pea pods off the vine, and taking photos of goldfinches ("goldpinches" per Henry) on the feeder, en famille ( Read more... )

We've seen them here very occasionally, and not recently.

We do get to see a whole flock of them in Fenway Park on September 9.

You astonish me. Maybe I'm mistaken about their range, but I know we used to see them fairly frequently around here, I used to see them regularly at certain times of the year at the last place I worked (in Waltham, MA), and I would have expected them to be common out in the country in your neighborhood.

I've always thought that the Baltimore Oriole was a good example of what a bird should be: nice voice and pretty to look at.

Wow. I've seen Baltimore Orioles in the city; we get orioles, blue jays and cardinals in our yard. My father has even seen an oriole in western Canada.

Will the goldpinches be on flickr?
