that sounds absolutely amazing and interesting, i think you should do it! i really want to go to chile/argentina/uruguay someday. well, a lot of south america, really.

Look really careful at safety. If you're at risk for being an American woman with a mind... don't go. Getting disappeared would be a big problem with graduating. And would make many of us sad.

Well, at present Pinochet is dead and the president of Chile is a socialist and a woman. Economically, the country is doing "miraculously" well. Thanks for the concern, but I think I'll be ok barring a coup.

Anne, I don't know how much national issues might affect local areas. Lady socialists ≠ safety. See: Indira Gandhi. Just depends on where you go in Chile.
