Without actually getting into full-on nanowrimo, I've been trying to make November into a writing month. I am really liking this so far, Anne - both world building and characterizations. I'm looking forward to more. It is interesting to me that Naprem is (1) a woman who was denied education as a girl, and (2) took pride in her work and her ability to do it. Ziyal is, I think, a gentler soul than her mother, but both of them have a quiet strength and a determination to make their own choices and go their own way. At least, so it seems to me.

DS9 is well-written enough to give me plenty to build on, but with just enough gaps to allow room for my own imagination. I want Bajoran society to be something that supports and validates Naprem, but also constrains her - and your comments suggest that I have managed to get that across. I think a pride in your work, in particular, would be one of the upsides of the d'jarra system - everyone has their place, and everyone's work is valuable (theoretically) to society and to the Prophets. But of course some work is more pleasant, some less, and many people are doing work to which they are not suited ( ... )
