Ah, Twin Peaks. Who else has fallen under the spell? I myself enjoy unhappy endings as well. It always seems so contrived when good things just start suddenly happening to all the good people towards the end of a film, especially when they leave out someone who did well (useually the main persons sidekick). Unhappy endings, or at least mixed endings give you more of a chance for complexity and a better way to convey what life is all about.
Of course this isn't including "sad" endings, where the main charictor sacrificies themself, but it's still an overally sappy ending (especailly when the sacrifice is reveresed).
I hope this made sense, I just spent the day doing crazy physical and mental stuff at work...

Yeah, I agree about complexity. And I agree that an ending where a character sacrifices himself/herself somehow doesn't fall into the category of "unhappy endings," at least if that's what the character intended all along. "The Wicker Man" (original-not the Nicholas Cage version) is an example of the kind of plot I really like. But everyone's different.

I've not seen either Wickerman, although I do know how the origonal ends, (I saw just the ending once, I seem to know more movies by piecmeal catching than by seeing straight through) and thought it was pretty neat.
June dissapeared for me as well, work has gone crazy-go-nuts and suddenly the end of May was the end of June!

The Wicker Man rocks. And the soundtrack is nice too!
