My sister just sent me this link, and now I'm in tears.

I wish that everyone would have to read this before they surrender their animal to a shelter, or even before they decide to breed their animal. I can't imagine how I would feel if I ever had to give up Rosie or Juniper. While I was pregnant, I had this fear that the baby would have an allergy

I really hate this letter for a lot of reasons. But the hopeful thing to me is it doesn't have to be this way. I am failing at finding the right article but this link is a good place to start.

the few times we've had to give up a pet for whatever the reason, we've always tried (and managed) to give them to a neighbor or family member rather than taking them to the pound. fuck kill shelters--seriously. fuck 'em. not the people who work there necessarily (come on--this post came from an employee), but the policies in place that require the animals to be killed.

(however,it IS possible that some places don't allow pets and sometimes you just can't find anything else. I don't know what the situation is in Canada or the US but here many landlords won't allow cats or dogs.)
