Cut away one of the walls and encumber the bar with the axial power S that is to be determined, figure (b).
Which of course means that I need to cut away my walls of isolation, if I am to encumber any bars with some powerful S.
Engineering innuendo, I do that. (Should also be noted that said textbook defines bars ("stänger", actually) as one-dimensional structures that are mainly being stressed by pull and/or push type of tension.)
