The last paragraph of that story is the real reason. The previous government of John Howard brought in a completely un-telegraphed piece of legislation that effectively gutted the working conditions that Australians had built up over more than a century to pander to his 'big end of town' buddies.

Mr John Howard has now earned the distinction of being only the second Australian PM to not only loose an election but loose his seat. And over the same question of workers rights.

And I'm all for frightening the bejeebus out of small children in shopping centres. They might realise that consumerism is not actually a religion that way *cynical*

Sorry, forgot to also mention that many 'human resource' companies in Australia take up a lot of American 'resource management tropes' after they no longer work in the US ...
