Calgary, Alberta. I was six. It was the year my father died, and my mom's sister paid for all of us to to out for Christmas. I can still remember that airplane ride and how cold it was in Calgary.

Honestly, I can't remember ever sneaking out.

Carol Keeling, who lived around the corner. One time when I still travelled to Kitchener, I tracked her down and we got together a couple of times, but she had a totally different life after school than I did, and there was nothing left of the old friendship.
