Women Who Kick Ass Love-In

Oct 11, 2007 13:24

I randomly threw in a little note to Cora Munro in my batch of letters last night because I have had Last of the Mohicans on the brain lately (apparently holdouttrout had never seen it and I twisted her arm and made funny faces until she promised to add it to her DVD queue).  So I had to rewatch it for the twelve-millionth time. Still love it.  And then, of ( Read more... )

Erm...going from literature...the Pevensie sisters? Also, Anne Shirley, in a weird way. (Breaking slates counts, dammit!)

Aeryn Sun is my ultimate kick-ass female ever on TV.

Umumum...who else? Marian on the new Robin Hood is pretty fabulous. (Not so much the movie, though.)

Oooo! Obscurely, Leeloo from The Fifth Element. I love that awful movie SO MUCH.

Leeloo!! I am so there with you on the love for the badness that is that movie. With the chicken, and the multipass and Chris Tucker! Bwhah. And Leeloo kicks some serious ass in that movie.

Aeryn, of course. Warrior Pirate.

I have to admit not having seen the new Robin Hood (I take it that's what your icon is?) Does she kick Little John's butt or something? :)

Yeah, we had a big old discussion about Thatcher here a few weeks back. GIP. :)

I haven't seen GI Jane yet, I suppose I will have to add it to my queue! Oh, Color Purple, that last scene where Celie is just like, I am out of here and Sofia starts talking. Man, those women put up with a lot and still came out on top. Amazing.

Since daisycm83 mentioned Marion, I have to mention Marion from Robin of Sherwood. She was my heroine, when I was a kid; I wanted to be her - and not (just) because she was married to Robin Hood, but also because she puts up with Robin's protectiveness of his young bride for about .5 of an episode. She refused to be left behind, just because she was a girl. She explained, lucidly and passionately, that they were in this together, that if they were captured, she wouldn't be spared just because she was a girl - and that she absolutely would not sit back and watch him get killed. She dealt beautifully with being the only girl in an all-boy club. She was a kick-ass role model for a seven-year-old.

(Even though, judging by the outtakes, the actress who played her was absolutely the worst archer in the history of archery. *g*)

Yay! I think I will have to watch some of this. *adds to Netflix queue* Marion tends to be pretty cool in most of her incarnations (though some are much better than others). Awesome icon, even if slightly less so because we know she couldn't hit us if she tried, but we will just ignore that. lol

Ooh, cool, yes, watch it! Although, bear in mind it's from 1984, and they had no budget, so some of the sfx are a wee bit ropey. But their historical accuracy was glorious, despite that - much more so than most other Robins.

Kevin Costner's Robin film stole most of their ideas wholesale from that series. :)

Check. Crappy graphics. I think I can handle that to see Marion kick ass. :)

Scully!!! Dana Scully kicks ass. She's intelligent and not afraid to show it and she fights back when she needs to. Alas, the only Scully icon I have isn't appropriate, so I give you Moose and Squirrel.

Buffy Summers! No one kicks more ass than Buffy and always looks great doing it. But that's not as important as how Buffy just keeps rising to the occasion. She didn't want to save the world, she wanted to be a normal teen, but she realized that she had to do it, so she did.

That's two for right now. I'll keep thinking, which is hard to do after a full day of work. ;p

Definite room for Scully! And Buffy is still one of my fave kick ass chicks ever, especially because Josh Whedon conceived of the show after getting tired of seeing the blond chick get it in the first scene of every horror moving. A blond, valley girl who is a super hero? Heck yeah. (Hmm...Claire from Heroes. Another blond cheerleader who kicks ass. ;) Too many too choose from! What a nice dilemma to have, no?

Sydney Bristow - I loved how she could kick ass, take names, love her friends, and get all teary eyed over her boys.

Margaret Hot Lips Houlihan - because she was so much better than the rest of them at her job.

I've also always adored Eleanor of Aquatine - esp the way Katherine Hepburn played her in the Lion in Winter.

And..because I think I was a bit ornery as a child...I liked the Prairie Bitch - Nellie Olson. Because sometimes I too wanted to shove the perfect Ingalls girls into the mud.

God, I loved Alias, and I'm willing to admit a lot of that was the shallow joy of seeing stupid men underestimate her and then she kicked their asses, all while wearing stilletos and some of the most awesome outfits ever. And you're right, she wasn't a robot either, she was tough and capable of emotional attachment.

Houlihan was awesome, especially towards the end. I love when she and Hawkeye ended up having this really deep respect for each other. She's like Teyla on Atlantis, the only person to keep their head in a crisis. ;)

Did you ever read Sunne in Splendor by Sharon Kay Penman? I've read a bunch of her other stuff and have had this one on my to read list for ages, all about Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Bwah. You need to talk to syxp about Nellie. I made this icon for her. :)

Oh, what about Lizzie Bennet? Oh yeah. She was a feminist for her time if I ever saw one.

Alias is by far one of my favorite tv shows ever. Every time she had a moment with Jack or Dixon or Will, I'd just get weepy. And I flat out bawled during the series finale. Their villains were great as well. Sark? Anna? Sloane? Irina? Layers of greatness and evil.

Penman is one of my favorite authors ever - I know have my mom hooked on her as well.

Lizzie Bennet is...perfection in so many ways. I pull out the 6 hour version (colin firth...guh) when ever I'm super maudlin.

I have an Annerb Version of the six hour BBC miniseries that with proper use of the fast forward button whittles the beast down to two hours of PERFECTION. The look. You know. When she's covering Georgiana's distress over by the piano and Darcy just looks at her and I absolutely want to melt. Do you like the newer version too? 'Cause the proposal scene in the rain is SMOKING. Not to mention all the Darcy's hand bits.

I feel in love with Penman's Welsh Trilogy when I was in college. Oh, Johanna and Llewelyn, your love was rather twisted. ;)
