For all of you (former) smokers out there who've quit or tried to quit, I'm wondering: did you ever have dreams about smoking? I'm trying to give coffee up for a while and last night I had a dream about drinking coffee, like a dream where I was drooling over how good it was...mmmmm...now that's what I call addiction ( Read more... )

What's wrong with coffee? Everybody's ragging on coffee. Coffee is great. You should also drink tea.

Coffee is great, but it depletes your body of calcium and iron, fucks with your heartbeat, makes you pee and dehydrates you, and speeds up your metabolism. The latter two are what concern me. My metabolism is too high; I have to eat unhuman and unhealthy amounts of food just to feel full (let alone gain wait) and I have a problem where I pee every hour or so. Don't know if it's related to coffee but I'm sure the coffee doesn't help.

i quit smoking about 15 months ago, and I remember having really intense dreams right as I was quitting. I don't believe that they were smoking related, just very vivid and surreal ( ... )

That's a nice analogy about the coastline for someone who is unfamiliar with the idea of a limit or an infinite sum but no, the coastline is of finite length. More precisely, the length of the coastline is bounded above by some finite number (because there is finite space on earth) so even if each additional unit of accuracy means the coastline is a little longer, the increments by which its length increases are so small that they would converge to finite number.

I don't have a confident answer but I do believe your response to a most excellent conundrum about measuring coastlines was far too glib ( ... )

I came across this quote recently:

"A mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems."
-Paul Erdös

Therefore, you cannot quit drinking coffee or you cease to function as a mathematician. Beware.
