As I approach age 40, I keep wishing it were possible for me to gather up a bunch of my favorite people and just go on a hilarious, spiritually enriching, adventure filled road trip.  But not only are there massive time constraints and responsibility constraints, I also know from experience that while many of my friends used to be road trip people ( Read more... )

Believe me, I understand the desire to go into forty with a bang, not a whimper! I hope you get something appropriately celebratory and self-sustaining worked out.

I'm trying to be through with being disappointed in myself.

I'm road trip people! But am I on your favorites list?

You are definitely on my favorites list, but I need to find someone local to come with me to where you are.

Indeed.

Spiritual enrichment sounds awesome right about now.

I went and lay down in the grass outside for a while on Friday and thought about how it used to be so easy for me to slip out of myself. Now I feel nervous any time I try to do that, although for an entirely different reason than what used to make me anxious. It used to be so easy for me that I felt there was a real danger that I would "come untied" from my physical being. Now I'm afraid that I'll find out I'm incapable of forgetting my physical being for even a few hours.

I'm road trip people, also, though I am also hesitant due to constraints. It would depend on the details. I've even done the road trip out to where Dan is at in the past.

I've done that trip in the past - not that Dan is in the past. ;)

No, you had it right the first time... I am in the past.

Perfect! We should grab a Nehi soda some time and have a battle of Rock-em Sock-em Robots!

I understand the feeling all too well. I'm not road trip people, if I ever was. I really am a homebody. Road food gives me heart burn and gas. The most I can hope to survive is a weekend camping trip. My moods turn on a dime which makes me annoying company to be around for any extended periods of time, and nothing is spiritually enriching.

I feel like we all need a reawakening of some sort.

An Algonquin Round Table or a Bloomsbury Group would be nice as well. Or even Thoreau's cabin in the wood that provides opportunity for socializing and also space for isolation when necessary.

We should all invest in Wisconsin acreage on a lake and make a big summer camp where we spend our summers together.

Sadly, my investment days are, I fear, not within sight.

As a relative young'un, I'm not quite as near 40 as the rest of y'all, but I am more than willing to join in the big excitings, given of course constraints. I love the idea, but I am as stuck as everyone else on the how.

I'd bet that for you, as for me, adventures that can accommodate children are more workable than adventures that exclude children.

That is most definitely true.
