Even though the snow had stopped by 6 in the evening yesterday, they canceled school today.  They didn't even bother to plow my subdivision until 6 a.m.  I suspect the cancellation was more due to budget cuts for snow plowing than it was due to truly unmanageable weather.

Plows have seemed delayed to me (at least in my complex) in the last couple of years. They also don't seem to do as good a job or as many passes or something, which leaves slush on the roads.

On the bright side, they'll save all that money plowing and not having school. On the down side, having kids get dumber and forcing their parents to stay home with them and skip work probably won't be a boon to the economy. It seems like that's how Chicago has handled everything the past 2 years - sacrifice the future for a few bucks today.

I remember missing school between K-PhD in the Chicago area on four days due to weather - 2 from the Blizzard of 79, 1 in HS when the power went out, and 1 in grad school when my car wouldn't start. Down here there's more rural communities, and I understand they're a little different, but still.

I saw a report yesterday that they kept the schools open in Springfield yesterday because somewhere around 50% of their kids get breakfast and lunch through the school, and if they closed school, all those kids would be going hungry. That's not a good thing.
